📕 New Publication Announcement | "Social Media and Hong Kong Christian Communities: Diversity and Equality"
by CAE Research Fellows, Prof. Ann Gillian Chu 朱安之 and Prof. Rachel Robertson

✍️Abstract
Social media in Hong Kong Christian communities has been viewed in terms of social equalization, allowing laity to shape theology and community practices. But how is social media an equalizer for religious communities, and along which social dimensions? Drawing on Heidi A. Campbell’s “layers” and Pauline Hope Cheong’s “logics” of power, we offer a framework for examining how social media affects leadership roles, community practices, ideology and identity, and approaches to religious texts, in terms of whether these impacts are continuous with and complementary to existing power structures, displace traditional authority, or involve a dialectic between the two. Through case studies of Hong Kong Christian Key Opinion Leaders (KOL), we show displacements of official roles by lay leaders interacting with an underlying logic of continuity along traditional lines such as gender, social class, and sexual orientation. Online structures of community practice complement existing power structures, reinforcing traditional hierarchies of identity, ideology, and religious texts. We conclude by considering how theological approaches to dispossession may help Hong Kong Christian communities to enter a dialectic of challenges and opportunities for equality.

The 1st Symposium on the Chinese Translation of the Greek Septuagint, jointly organised by the Divinity School of Chung Chi College, CUHK, and our Centre, was successfully held from 23 to 24 April 2026. Our associate director, Prof. George Mak, attended on behalf of the Centre for Sino-Christian Studies and participated alongside scholars, colleagues, and friends. It was indeed a valuable opportunity to exchange ideas and learn from one another.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the organisers for their thoughtful arrangements, which made the event a smooth and successful one, and provided a valuable platform for academic exchange and knowledge sharing. The Centre also looks forward to continuing its collaboration with different institutions and academic bodies in jointly promoting research and development in related fields.

.................................................................................................

📣What is Deep Incarnation, and What are the Criticisms?
📅Date: 24 Mar 2026 (TUE)
⏰Time: 14:00-15:30
📌Location: CEC1002
🎤Speaker: Prof. Niels Henrik Gregersen
📌Language: English
📌Abstract:
The Christology of deep incarnation takes its point of departure in John 1:14: “The Word (logos) became flesh (sarx), and dwelt among us.” Deep incarnation is the view that by assuming the particular life-story of the humanity of Jesus, God’s own Logos or Wisdom conjoins the material conditions of God’s world of creation ( “all flesh”), shares and ennobles all biological life-forms (“grass” and lilies”), and experiences the pains of all sentient creatures (“sparrows and foxes”). In this view, incarnation is the story of God’s reach into the very tissues of material and biological existence. The lecture will lay out the basic contours of deep incarnation, and also discuss and respond to critics of deep incarnation, some wanting to argue for an individualist view of incarnation, others wanting to do away with the divinity of incarnation.
🧷About the speaker:
Niels Henrik Gregersen (University of Copenhagen) is professor of systematic theology, and a co-leader of the Copenhagen Centre for Science and Faith. He was the initiator behind the idea of deep incarnation.

His most recent book is Spiritual Life and Secular Thought: A Phenomenology (Oxford University Press, 2026).

In recent years, Western society has witnessed the emergence of a new demographic that identifies as “spiritual but not religious”, one which has received much attention in sociology and religious studies. Concurrently, Western philosophy has also shown much interest in the notion of philosophy as a way of life or what Pierre Hadot calls as a spiritual exercise (exercice spirituel). This seminar seeks to put these two phenomena into consideration together and offer ways in which contemporary philosophy of religion and philosophical theology can engage with the notion of non-religious spirituality in a serious and constructive manner..................................................................................................
