Shame on President Zhang Xiang for avoiding students of HKU.
Joint Statement in response to the visiting of JCSV-II on Feb 26
The President, Professor Zhang Xiang and Vice-President, Professor Ian Holliday was originally scheduled to visit residential halls in Jockey Club Student Village II and Swire Hall, however Professor Zhang Xiang did not appear in sight yesterday without any prior communication. We deeply regret the professor’s attitude of shying away from the students and staff of HKU, and demand that he responds to the student body’s request immediately and take action to heal the relationship between the school authority and the student body.
It is a shame on Professor Zhang that he elected to hide away in his office, away from the students at his own university, and that he rather serves as a puppet to the regime of China and Hong Kong. His act yesterday is no difference from a coward’s, and he failed the public’s expectation on him as president of HKU. Furthermore, his abnegation to face the students can only provide more proof that he has been neglecting student’s opinion all along, and that it is beyond question that he is responsible for the countless failures in school policies.
The visit yesterday also reflects that the management of the university refuses to listen to any opinion presented by students. For most time, the two representatives from the university chose to stay indoors and play stunt in front of staffs and non-local students, when dozens of students have been peacefully demonstrating their voices outside. We urge the management that public relations stunt like this one does nothing to help our historic university from the deteriorating circumstances.
We urge the management, under the leadership of Professor Zhang, to refrain from conducting any more meaningless gestures or shows, that they ought to take the student body’s concerns seriously in any future policy agenda, and they must maintain the independence of the student union, the academic integrity and freedom of expression within campus.
