GE Salon

These scholars delivered excellent speeches revolving around the theme, and provoked in-depth and extensive discussions.

The aim of GE Salon is to explore iss

ues of common human concern from a cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural perspective, with a view to encouraging students to reflect upon questions relating to the contemporary world and to create an atmosphere for the holdings of intellectual discussions on campus. In 2006, the Research Centre for General Education (renamed as "Baldwin Cheng Research Centre for General Education in 2011) organised a series of GE Salons on "War and Peace", featuring scholars and experts from different fields. Due to the overwhelming response, a second series of talks, "War and Peace II", was held in 2007 to continue discussions on the topic. In 2008, the Research Centre for General Education and Office of University General Education co-organized the GE Salon with Hong Kong Association of European Studies, and the series was titled "Politics and Culture: The European Experience". "Classics for Today" was the main theme of the GE Salons since 2009, speakers in this series explored the perennial questions in human societies and reflected upon modern life and social conditions through a number of classics in humanities and natural science.

For CUHK students:
[Classics Talkathon 經典說不停] On the Origin of Species meets The Book of Genesis

Ready to dive into a lively chat about two iconic GE texts—Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species and the Bible’s The Book of Genesis—with your CUHK peers?

Co-hosted by OUGE and ELTU, this workshop offers an intimate space (max 8 students) for relaxed English dialogue—no stuffy lectures, just free flow of your insights on these timeless texts. Topics are wide open: explore the potential biological and theological roots (and their inherent dilemmas) of Human and Animal Rights, ponder human-animal relationship, untangle tensions between revealed religions and modern science, or chase any thought that piques your intellectual curiosity. Two educators from OUGE and two from ELTU will guide the conversation gently (no lectures!) and offer subtle tips on English expression. For non-native speakers, it’s the perfect chance to grow confident in sharing classroom-inspired ideas—skills that will shine in tutorials and term papers.

Join us to share your voice, deepen your connection with these classics, and engage in thoughtful dialogue!

DNA: The Secret of Life

General Education Foundation Programme: 2025-26 Student Activity Fund - Call for Application

Dear students,

Since 2012, the General Education (GE) Foundation Programme has been fully launched in CUHK. Gradually, UGFH and UGFN have become a common learning experience of the CUHK. In 2025-26, the GE Foundation Programme will continue to offer the Student Activity Fund (SAF) to encourage student-initiated activities related to the two foundation courses. Through these activities, we hope to promote classics reading by nourishing an enjoyable atmosphere of classics reading in various communities in and out of the campus, and to appreciate the impacts of classics on contemporary society.

The SAF fund accepts applications from both individuals and groups. We encourage diversified activities to promote classics reading, including exhibitions, reading groups, performance, APPs, websites and art designs, etc. Each project should be completed within one year, and could be supported up to HKD 30,000. The deadline for 2025-26 SAF fund application is 16 November 2025.
