Crawfordton House Private Tour

With temperatures soaring above 25°C in Scotland last weekend, we were all “warmly” welcomed by the architect owner of Crawfordton House, Mr Kenneth Ko, an acclaimed architect designer from Hong Kong whose reputation was established well before most of us were even born. The beautifully refurbished, B-listed, castle-like house captivated us during the tour. Yet it was a true masterpiece in Mr Ko’s library that drew the most attention - eliciting unbalanced admiration, bursts of “wow,” and memories destined to stay with us for years to come.

Our gratitude also goes to Ms Irene Man for her thoughtful and generous arrangement of the long-table tea, during which Mr Ko took the stage. He wittily shared his design philosophy, fascinating stories from his past, and even details of his latest creative project, a funeral parlour he is joyfully working on.

As the sun set behind the castle, we reluctantly made our way back to Dumfries town centre, where most of us were staying. There was no better place to gather than the historic Globe Inn (est. 1610), where we enjoyed an evening of “intellectual” conversation as alumni of the University of Hong Kong. Our discussions flowed from the subtleties of cheese tasting to the delightful surprise of freshly deep-fried crisps, and even to our near-success in sitting on Robert Burns’ famous chair! The bard himself left a deep imprint on Dumfries and the Globe Inn - an unmissable stop for anyone wishing to connect with the poet who warmed Scotland’s winters with words.

The train journey back from Dumfries to London was not merely a return across miles, but across centuries. As I navigated the bustling streets of the modern city, my mind lingered on the serenity of the red-sandstone town, seemingly unchanged since the 18th century. Within a short walk lie a handful of churches, while the 15th-century Devorgilla Bridge still stands, timeless and unyielding, carrying us back through history.

What a life that would be!

A Very British Walk in Leigh Woods, Bristol

Despite the classic British weather — damp, drizzly, and unmistakably moody — our walk through Leigh Woods turned out to be a truly memorable and heartwarming experience.

We set off under soft rain, surrounded by green canopies and misty trails. True to British form, the weather only added character to the day, not a single bit of it dimming our spirits.

🌿 Midway through, we stumbled upon an architecturally intriguing pavilion tucked in the woods — a welcome shelter with a striking central rooflight that gave the space a quiet, almost sacred quality. It offered not just dry ground, but a chance to pause and appreciate the calm of the forest.

☕ From there, we wandered to the nearby garden centre, where the air was fragrant with blooms and damp earth. We enjoyed a very British tea complete with homemade sandwiches, surrounded by pots of lavender and rosemary — an unexpected sensory delight.

🐶 A playful moment followed as we met a local dog and its owner — and soon found ourselves cheering the pup on as it leapt joyfully into the pond after sticks we tossed in.

🌉 The route carried us along grand brick arches and the iconic Brunel bridge, reminders of Victorian engineering at its finest — standing proud, and more than a century older than all of us.

🍻 The day wrapped up in the most British way possible: with a stop at a local pub, followed by comforting shepherd’s pie at the station — simple, satisfying, and just right after a good long walk.

We were joined by alumni living near Bristol and warmly welcomed parents visiting their children in the UK, which gave the gathering a wonderfully personal and intergenerational feel. Conversations flowed, laughter echoed through the woods, and by the end, what could have been a rainy trudge turned into a cosy, laughter-filled day to remember.

It was, in every sense, a very British outing — and all the better for it.

About TO BE CONTINUED

Convenient, tired and vapid, ‘East-meets-West’ is a cliché that has for decades been used to sell the ‘Hong Kong story’ to the world. Yet in the forgotten legend of Harry Odell, Hong Kong’s first impresario, a rediscovery of the city’s soul awaits.

Flamboyant and cigar-chomping, Odell was a Cairo-born, Shanghai-bred Russian Jew who stamped his mark on the cultural life of post-war Hong Kong, His hopeful, if chronically loss-making adventures pushed the cultural frontiers of his adopted home, capturing the open, dynamic and inclusive spirit of a bygone era to leave a legacy that resonates to this day.

What began as a conservation campaign to save the iconic State Theatre in Hong Kong morphed into five years of research and interviews with those who witnessed Odell in action. The result: a film that is as much a study of one indomitable pioneer as it is a soul-searching journey of what defines Hong Kong.
