(Please read to this to the end) Thank you to everyone who commented on yesterday’s post of this sailboat - it was really overwhelming… in a good way! I had several people suggest that I should donate a percentage of the sales proceeds (profit) of this photo to the owner of the boat (Daniel Faulk), who has had medical issues for most of his life. I kind of felt it wasn't right to profit at the expense of someone else’s misfortune, so I think it’s a great idea! Daniel is trying to raise enough funds to pull the boat off the beach - which, apparently, is very expensive! Daniel had a very harrowing and injurious experience which led to the beaching of his sailboat. The Journal of International Business Studies Paper Development Workshop (JIBS-PDW) will be held on Wednesday 7th December 2022, as part of AIB Asia Pacific Conference 2022 at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China.

The JIBS-PDW is organized by Prof. Pingping Fu (Nottingham University Business School China, JIBS Editorial Review Board Member), and two Area Editors from the 2023-2025 JIBS Editorial Team (Prof. J.T. Li, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and Prof. Xufei Ma, Tsinghua University). The purpose of the JIBS-PDW is to provide scholars with developmental feedback on their current research projects in International Business. Authors will be paired with senior International Business scholars for discussions on their papers (in-person or online).

We invite original papers from doctoral students or faculty members who have not previously published in JIBS. We particularly encourage papers from scholars (1) who are located at universities that offer limited support for international business research, or (2) who are trained in disciplines less commonly associated with the field (e.g., human geography, political science, or economic history) but interested in conducting international business research. While we hope that many of these papers will eventually be submitted to JIBS, the aim of the PDW is more generally to heighten the quality of IB research, and bring new scholars into the IB field.

To apply to the JIBS-PDW, you should go to https://meetings.aib.msu.edu/asiapacific/2022/ and click on “Manuscript Submission Form” and then next to Track, please select JIBS Paper Development Workshop. If you have any trouble making the submission, please contact Yuxue Luo via [email protected].

The deadline for submissions is Friday September 30, 2022. Each applicant can submit only one paper to the JIBS-PDW, but you may submit the same version of the paper to another track for presentation at the conference. The paper submitted for consideration must not have been published in another publication. Papers must be less than 10,000 words in length. Your cover page should include all the author names, emails and affiliations.

You will be notified about the acceptance of your submission by October 15th, and will need to confirm participation by October 30th, which is the early-bird registration deadline for the conference. All participants must be AIB members and register for the conference before they confirm their attendance at the JIBS-PDW.

Topic on the workshop on 15 May by Prof Sea-Jin Chang:
Competition between local and foreign firms in China

This workshop examines how winners came out on top of the fierce marketplace of China’s economic reform. It looks at how successful multinational firms grew their operations in China and how successful local firms emerged from the restructuring process, as well as the competition between them. As a consequence of cutthroat competition, Chinese industries are increasingly consolidated. While the extent to which emerging local firms can challenge well-established multinational firms varies by industry, there are common characteristics of winners within each firm type. A handful of multinational and local firms emerged victorious by acquiring small, weak, and regional players to become truly national players. During this process, weaker multinational firms were crowded out of the market by stronger multinationals as well as by emerging local powerhouses. The successful local firms that survive competition in China have global ambitions and venture into international markets, challenging foreign multinational firms in the global marketplace. This workshop will examine some of my prior empirical research on this topic. I hope to describe the process of the emergence of both multinational and local firms, the competition between and among them, and the performance implications of this process.

An introduction to our renowned instructor of the Workshop Serie on 22 May 2021:

Prof Saeed Samiee is the Collins Professor of Marketing and International Business at The University of Tulsa. He has contributed to scholarly journals in marketing and international business, including the Journal of Marketing, Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, Strategic Management Journal, and Journal of International Business Studies.

He is an area editor for the Journal of International Business Studies, an Associate Editor for Decision Sciences Journal (marketing and international business), and serves on the editorial review and/or advisory boards of thirteen scholarly journals in marketing and international business.

He received the Significant Contributions to Global Marketing Award (Lifetime Achievement Award) from the AMA's Global Marketing SIG in 2017 and is an AIB Fellow and a Distinguished Fellow of the Academy of Marketing Science.

An introduction to our renowned instructor of the first Workshop Serie:

Prof Sea-Jin Chang is a Lim Kim San Chair Professor of Business Administration, National University of Singapore and also a Techno-SK Chair Professor at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (joint appointment). He received his BA and MA in economics from Seoul National University and Ph.D. in strategic management from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He was previously a faculty member at the Stern School of Business of the New York University and Korea University, and also had visiting appointments at Stanford Business School, INSEAD, London Business School, Hitotsubashi University and Wharton School.

Professor Chang is primarily interested in the management of diversified multinational firms. His current research focuses on understanding the process of creating operating synergies among diversified lines of business and building a strong local organization after foreign entry. His other research interests include organizational learning, corporate growth through joint ventures and acquisitions, foreign direct investment, and comparative management studies of Japan, Korea, and China.

His book, Sony vs. Samsung: The Inside Story of the Electronics’ Giants Battle for Global Supremacy (Wiley, 2008) compares and contrasts these two firms’ global strategy. His other books, The Rise and Fall of Chaebols: Financial Crisis and Transformation of Korean Business Groups (Cambridge University Press, April 2003) and Business Groups in East Asia: Crisis, Restructuring and New Growth (Oxford University Press, 2006), examine the post-crisis restructuring activities of large business groups in Asia. The Multinationals in China: Entry Strategies, Competition, and Performance (Oxford University press, 2013), examines the evolution of strong local companies and localized multinationals in China and competition between them.

He previously served as an Area Editor of the Journal of International Business Studies, and is an Associate Editor of the Strategic Management Journal and Industrial and Corporate Change. A native Korean, Professor Chang, is married to Kyungmee, a composer of modern classical music, and they have two daughters, Melody and Harmony.
