Congratulations to Prof. WANG Dan, Professor of the Division of Environment and Sustainability ENVR - HKUST, for receiving HK$5.6 million from RGC’s Collaborative Research Fund 2025/26! The funding will support a project titled “Sustainable AI Datacenter with Immersion Cooling and Generalized Carbon Estimation” led by Prof. Wang, in collaboration with PolyU. 🌱🤝

Eight Outstanding ENVR Students Awarded the Great Eagle Group Scholarship 2025

Eight Students from HKUST, Division of Environment and Sustainability, have been honored with the Great Eagle Group Scholarship 2025 for their achievements in sustainable development, the environment, and energy. This prestigious award celebrates students who demonstrate not only academic excellence but also a strong commitment to creating a more sustainable future.

Following the ceremony, representatives from the Great Eagle Group, CityU and HKUST participated in a lab visit at CityU.

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to all awardees for their outstanding contributions and express our sincere appreciation to the Great Eagle Group for their generous support, which continues to inspire and empower the next generation of sustainability leaders.

📢Calling all young scientists, researchers, and climate enthusiasts!

The International Young Scientist Workshop on Atmospheric Environment (IYSAE 2026) will be held at HKUST from January 26–31, 2026.

Building on the success of IYSAE 2025, this workshop will bring together leading experts and early-career researchers from around the world to join an interactive forum dedicated to advancing knowledge in atmospheric chemistry, air quality, and climate interactions. Building on its strong legacy, IYSAE 2026 highlights cutting-edge, unpublished research, dynamic discussions, and multidisciplinary collaboration across observations, modeling, AI applications, and health impacts.

📌 Key Themes:
• Atmospheric Reactive Nitrogen and Their Environmental Impacts
• Atmospheric Reactive Organics: From VOCs to Oas
• Health Impacts Assessment and Indoor Air Quality
• The Interplay Between Extreme Weather and Air Quality
• Development of Measurement Technologies and Sensors for Air Science
• Al + integrated Air Quality Forecasting and Modelling
• Additional Topics on Climate and Air Quality

🌱EVMT Capstone Project Mid-Progress Presentation

The EVMT Capstone Project Mid-Progress Presentation 2025 Fall was successfully held in early December. There are seven groups this year, and during the presentation, the student groups shared their progress, presented preliminary findings, and received constructive feedback from their capstone advisors and faculty members. The presentations showcased the students’ ability to integrate classroom concepts into real-world environmental and sustainability challenges, reflecting the hard work and dedication of each team. The Capstone Project final presentations will be held at the end of the term in the final year.

In the CWR interview, Prof. CHEN Fei, Associate Head and Professor of the Division of Environment and Sustainability, explains why severe thunderstorms remain so unpredictable, even as typhoons can be forecast days in advance. Prof. Chen also shares how our research team at HKUST is pioneering ultra-high-resolution urban weather modelling, combining physics-based science with AI, to help tropical coastal cities like Hong Kong anticipate not just how much rain will fall, but where it will do the most damage, laying essential foundations for extreme-weather early warning systems that keep our communities safer.

With over 30 years of academic and research experience, Prof. Fung’s groundbreaking research, leadership, and dedication to teaching continue to drive impactful solutions for a sustainable future and inspire students across disciplines.

Prof. Jimmy FUNG, the Associate Provost (Teaching & Learning) and Chair Professor in the Division of Environment and Sustainability ENVR - HKUST and Department of Mathematics, has been featured by the Office of the Provost as HKUST’s Star Faculty! 🌟

As a well-recognized expert in atmospheric sciences, climate modeling, and air quality, Prof. Fung has made significant contributions on tackling environmental challenges 🌍, including developing Asia’s first university-based air quality forecasting system and co-creating the PRAISE-HK app 📱for real-time air quality monitoring. He is also dedicated to teaching, upholding the belief that inspired students come from dedicated teachers.
