CUHK Department of Music

CUHK Department of Music Founded in 1965, the Department of Music has been providing practical and academic training in both Chinese and Western music for over half a century.

It is Hong Kong's first degree-granting music department and awarded its first BA diplomas in 1969. Music Department boasts an international teaching team with a wide range of expertise, which has nurtured important musicians of Chinese and Western music for decades. Its library and archival collections are among the most important in Asia. It has its own symphony and wind orchestra, choir, and ha

s many other types of music ensembles. All full-time faculty members of the Music Department hold doctoral degrees from well-respected universities. Most of the part-time instructors, who are largely responsible for instrumental lessons, hold either Master's or Doctoral degrees. Many of these musicians perform professionally in Hong Kong, and a number are members of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, and the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra.

🗣️How does your time at CUHK Music influence your career/current work?
At CUHK, I began to realize that music is about much more than performance itself. Through conversations with professors and classmates, I started thinking more deeply about the relationship between music, society, and culture, and about what kind of musician I wanted to become. That period helped me build a solid intellectual foundation. It also shaped the direction of my career beyond performing, eventually leading me into curatorial work and work in higher education.

🗣️What are some of your proudest works since graduation?
After graduation, I had the opportunity to perform at large-scale shows, including appearances at the Hong Kong Coliseum and the Central Harbourfront event space. On both occasions, I was featured in short solo passages. Even within those brief moments, standing at the center of a major stage allowed me to experience the intensity and energy of live performance at a different scale. Those experiences became meaningful milestones in my development as a music performer.

Beyond performing, I gradually became involved in arts curation and project management. I curated several projects related to Cantonese music for the art group TROVESSIONAL, including an online animated series featuring Nanyin children’s songs, as well as various community-based performance initiatives. I also took part in performance planning for the Chief Executive’s visit to the Middle East. In parallel with my artistic practice, I have been engaged in teaching at the tertiary level. These experiences have allowed me to work across different cultural contexts and have given me a deeper understanding of what meaningful artistic exchange can look like in practice.

Felix Yeung
Provincial Music Director (Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui); Director of Music (St John’s Cathedral)
MMus, ARAM, DipRAM (RAM)

🗣️What are the most significant insights, experiences, or growth you gained from your time at CUHK Music?
I served as chairman to the committee of the Chung Chi Choir for two years. This experience was immensely helpful to my career as we were preparing the Choir’s first out-of-campus performance in Tsuen Wan Town Hall Auditorium. From applying for grants and finding sponsors, to arranging visas for overseas artists and negotiating with the performance venues, these are all valuable experiences in running different choirs in my career.

🗣️What is your most unforgettable memory during your time at CUHK Music?
One of my most unforgettable memories at the Department of Music was our graduation musical – ‘A Purple Summer’ among a few friends. We used the corridor between the stage and the first row of the audience into a small orchestra pit, and we made simple sets with choir risers and tables.

🗣️What is the most memorable piece you performed during your studies?
In Remembrance, from Eleanor Daley’s Requiem.

🗣️What are some of your proudest works since graduation?
Any proudest works will need to include the recording of the album ‘Constraints / Creativity’, which is a collection of Cantonese choral works of Professor Kai-young Chan, with my chamber choir Die Konzertisten. The recording took place in our very Lee Hysan Concert Hall and many fond memories of Chung Chi Choir rehearsals reappeared as we worked through days of recording sessions.

Jarita Wan
Musical Theatre Actress
Founder of Theatre Hikari, London & Hong Kong

🗣️ What kind of place is CUHK Music to you?
CUHK Music was an elegant, musical playground for me. I started my journey with a raw, passionate, and playful soul, and was fortunate to meet many established, supportive teachers and musically talented friends. They did not only inspire me and guide my musical craftsmanship but also became a source of long-lasting warmth. This community shaped my university life, giving me the strength and loving memories that will stay with me forever.

🗣️ What is your most unforgettable memory during your time at CUHK Music?
What remains etched in my heart is the profound passion and generosity. I vividly remember a brilliant classmate spending his precious hours tutoring me through complex theory, and the quiet afternoons I spent training my classmate with different chords in the piano rooms. My violinist roommate’s care and home-cooked dinners provided a sanctuary. Above all, I am indebted to the late Professor Michael McClellan; his instant belief in my soul when I pivoted from piano to voice paved my path. I am now a musical theatre artist because of that collective love.

🗣️ What are some of your proudest works since graduation?
I take immense pride in three award-winning productions that defined my path as a leading lady. My journey began with The Passage Beyond (2009–2012), marking my debut performance as well as an album recording alongside the HK Sinfonietta. Later, The Nightingale 夜鶯 (2019) became a personal breakthrough, earning dual HK Drama Award nominations for both my composition and performance. Finally, The Impossible Trial 大狀王 (2019) premier stood as a cultural landmark, celebrating the grand opening of the Xiqu Centre. These roles were not just performances, but the pillars of my artistic identity.

🗣️What kind of place is CUHK Music to you?
CUHK Music is a vibrant and welcoming community that encourages creativity, collaboration, and personal growth. Students are given various opportunities to explore their musical identity, refine their skills, and discover who they want to become, both as musicians and as individuals. It’s an encouraging environment that values creativity, growth, and self-discovery, allowing everyone to learn and express themselves freely.

🗣️What is your most unforgettable memory during your time at CUHK Music?
My Graduation Concert, where I programmed and performed one half of percussion music and conducted the other half with wind ensemble music, gathering a group of talented and passionate musicians whom I’m proud to call friends to this day. It was an incredibly fulfilling experience to watch everything come together. The concert was a celebration of my musical journey thus far at CUHK, combining my love for percussion and conducting into a programme that expressed who I am as a musician.

🗣️What are some of your proudest works since graduation?
I’m extremely fortunate to be part of the third cohort of the Orchestre Métropolitain’s Orchestral Conducting Academy, where I receive regular mentorship from the incredible Yannick Nézet-Séguin and work with an orchestra that is both exceptionally high-level and remarkably warm and supportive, truly reflecting who Yannick is and who I aspire to be as a conductor and leader. I’m also very proud of my work as Director of the UBC Symphonic Wind Ensemble, where we recently gave our first concert together in October 2025. It was inspiring to see the students’ dedication and musicality come to life, and I’m excited to continue building on this momentum in the years ahead.

Samuel Leung
DMA Candidate in Piano Accompanying and Chamber Music (Eastman)
2026 Aspen Music Festival Orchestral Piano Fellow

🗣️ What kind of place is CUHK Music to you?
CUHK Music is a vibrant place that provides students with a positive and supportive environment to pursue knowledge of music to an elite standard. I remember being fascinated by my classmates’ diligence and commitment to their crafts during my time as an undergraduate. This department is THE place that can foster one’s lifelong interest in music.

🗣️ What are the most significant insights, experiences, or growth you gained from your time at CUHK Music?
I had a fairly flexible academic schedule, which significantly honed my self-discipline and organizational skills. These skills are crucial in my current field as a doctoral student in piano accompanying and chamber music. I have to juggle multiple academic and musical tasks on a daily basis while aiming for work-life balance. Being confident in task organization and time management is the key to success as a collaborative pianist. What is the most memorable piece you performed during your studies?

🗣️ What are some of your proudest works since graduation?
I was deeply grateful to be selected as one of the six collaborative piano fellows at the Bowdoin International Music Festival 2023, and one of the two orchestral piano fellows at the Aspen Music Festival in 2024, and to be reinvited in 2025 and 2026. I also made public appearances as a piano collaborator at the Ghent International Clarinet Competition and the Minnesota Public Radio “Performance Today Young Artist” program.
