GE1305 - Everyday Physics: Its Impact on You and Society - 物理與日常生活: 對你和社會的影響

In this course, a non-mathematical approach will introduce students to concepts of physics that are of general relevance and that enable well-informed opinions and choices in daily life. Students are expected to develop the habit of thinking in a scientific way, viz. evidence-based critical thinking in the framework of physical principles. The course will be run in a combination of short lectures

or videos, self-studies or group discussions on examples drawn from recent news, scientific reports, or even product marketing materials. Typical examples of pertinent topics are global warming, renewable energy sources, anti-terrorist technologies, LCD displays and 3-D movies, tsunamis and space travel. If timetabling allows, visits to facilities like power plants, research laboratories, or the Science Museum will be organized. The students will be assessed through written and oral presentations of their results from self-studies or group discussions. Online discussions may also be used as an assessment tool.
