Cityu GE 2307 Science, Fiction and the Supernatural (自然科學,科幻小說和超自然現象)

Science is presented in this course as a search for understanding, and students are introduced to basic concepts of the scientific method. Limitations of the scientific method are discussed in relation to its inability to explain supernatural/paranormal phenomena such as UFOs, near-death experiences, hypnosis, Yin/Yang bioenergy, and the healing power of Qi-gong and meditation. The general feature

s of the narrative approach employed in psychology and the social sciences, and that used in science fiction and ancient mythology, are discussed to explore the modern fantasy and science fiction genres, as well as the various contradictory themes in ancient mythology and science. The human fascination with monsters, ghosts, vampires and the supernatural world is explored through their depiction in selected works of literature from different cultures and historical periods.
