The course provides a general understanding of the relationship between the global financial markets and our society, including an overview of the major financial markets, brief descriptions of activities within these markets, the major players in the markets, main financial products and services, and the impact of financial markets on modern society. The course examines the functions and operatio

ns of central banks, commercial banks, investment banks, insurance companies and other financial corporations. Upon completion of this course, students will be familiar with how financial markets impact on society, and be able to discuss some important weaknesses of the existing financial system. Students will get to look at the operations of major financial markets worldwide, explain the roles of major financial institutions in the society, and how the major players play a dominant role in this system. Students will study some historical developments of financial markets, look at the influence of politics on financial markets and impact of psychology on markets, debate whether central bank board members are doing the right thing, examine financial ethics problems, governance, social issues and evolving regulations. Students are expected to discuss various issues in class and articulate their views through group projects and written assignments.
