【Biology Departmental Symposium 2026】

Biology Departmental Symposium 2026 successfully concluded on 3 June 2026, bringing together over 90 faculty members, invited guests, RPg students and postdoctoral fellows for a full day of cross‑disciplinary talks, oral presentations and a two‑part poster session spanning Animals & Medicine, Plant Biology and Environmental Biology.

🎙 Opened by Prof. Li Jianming, Head of the Department of Biology, the programme featured four invited talks bridging fundamental science, synthetic biology and innovation:

- Prof. Gao Jieqiong, Assistant Professor, Division of Life Science, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology
- Dr. Jin Jie, Industry Professor in Hubei Province and Senior Engineer in Biomedicine
- Mr. Fever Chu, Partner & Director, TODOT design; ex Co Founder, Zence Object Technology
- Dr. Zhao Qiao, Professor, Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences; Director, Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Synthetic Genomics

Congratulations to Prof. Liao Pan on receiving the President’s Award for Outstanding Performance as an Early Career Researcher! Prof. Liao Pan (Department of Biology) specialises in plant biotechnology, biochemistry, specialised metabolism, and lipid metabolism. His research appears in leading journals—including Biotechnology Advances, Food Frontiers, and Metabolic Engineering—with several papers each cited more than 280 times.

Students from the Department of Biology and Year 1 students of the Faculty of Science visited the Towngas farm “Farming for Charity” in Yuen Long on 7 March 2026. During this engaging hands-on field trip, they learned about seeding techniques, explored modern farming technologies, and harvested fresh luscious green vegetables that Towngas later donated to local elderly centres. The experience deepened the students’ appreciation for sustainable food production and community service, while they enjoyed a sunny, fun day outdoors.

On 28 March 2026, our students visited the Hong Kong Museum of Medical Sciences to enrich their public health knowledge and experience. They stepped back in time to 1894 to learn about the plague—its causes and how medical science tackled the crisis—discovered early vaccine production at the Old Bacteriological Institute, and examined concerns around more recent infectious diseases. An eye-opening visit with very positive feedback from students.
