A groundbreaking study by the Faculty of Social Sciences at HKU, in collaboration with LSE, reveals that global migration has nearly tripled since 2000 - reaching around 35 million people per year in 2023.

Published in Nature, the research - co-authored by Professor Guy Abel from the Department of Sociology - introduces the first comprehensive annual dataset (1990โ€“2023), using advanced deep learning to uncover patterns previously hidden in fragmented data.

Spanning regions from the Middle East to the Global South, the study highlights how human mobility is evolving and what drives it.
