Between Fiction & Non-Fiction: A Filmmaker’s Journey from Traditional Cinema to Immersive Storytelling

- by Tsang Tsui-Shan | Artist-in-Residence, Lingnan University

About the Talk

Join us for an intimate conversation with Hong Kong filmmaker Tsang Tsui-Shan, our current Artist-in-Residence, as she shares her winding creative path—from documentary realism to fictional narratives, and into the immersive storytelling world.

Tsang’s work has never fit neatly into categories. Her documentaries often feel like carefully crafted dramas, while her fiction films breathe with the spontaneity of real life. With projects like “Chroma 11”, she’s exploring how VR can create new kinds of emotional truth—where audiences don’t just watch a story, but step inside it.

In this talk, she shares her journey: how documentary honesty fuels fictional depth, why she embraced immersive technologies as a new language for connection, and what emerging storytellers can learn from straddling mediums. Join us to explore how stories transform across forms—and how they transform us in return.
