In this feature, we are pleased to introduce Ms Vicki Yuan Tianyi, a 2025 graduate of the Master of Education (MEd) programme, specialising in Health and Physical Education (HPE). 2025 is a meaningful year for Ms Yuan. Her experience highlights how real progress comes from learning that goes beyond familiar patterns, turning education from theory into practice. Reflecting on her journey, Ms Yuan attributes the strengthening of her teaching experience and deeper understanding to the structured academic training and reflective learning supported by the MEd programme.
❓𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗘𝗱𝗨𝗛𝗞?
Ms Yuan earned her undergraduate degree from Zhejiang University. She chose EdUHK for its strong academic reputation and welcoming campus atmosphere. Through the MEd programme, she gained systematic academic guidance and a broader educational vision, while co-curricular activities and campus resources helped her settle into Hong Kong, China, and build cross-cultural friendships.
❓𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗢𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗗𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗘𝗱𝗨𝗛𝗞 𝗢𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿?
Ms Yuan believes education goes beyond the classroom door, so she moved from receiving knowledge to actively testing her ideas. She took part in teaching placements across different ages and subjects, from early years to adult education, from art workshops to science classes. These experiences sharpened her ability to respond to different learners’ needs from multiple angles.
She also worked as a student helper on several occasions. Organising campus events strengthened her planning and teamwork skills, while regular conversations with teachers and students deepened her connection to Hong Kong’s culture and exposure to Cantonese.
❓𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗗𝗼 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗱𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗚𝗼 𝗔𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗘𝗱𝗨𝗛𝗞?
Ms Yuan graduated with Distinction and subsequently passed the selection process to join Hangzhou West Lake Scenic Spot Cultural Tourism Co., Ltd., where she now manages tourism projects. For Ms Yuan, this job reflects a clear belief: education matters in schools and equally across society. She describes tourism as “live education”. When people travel, they experience cultural diversity directly. This idea connects closely with what she learned at EdUHK.
💌𝗔 𝗠𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀
Ms Yuan advises future cohorts to consider the MEd holistically, “Grades are a checkpoint. Learning happens beyond the classroom as well. Learn with curiosity, and enjoy the process along with the outcome.”
