Congratulations to our final year environmental health student Lauryn Dwyer who was invited by the National Environmental Health Service Sunbeds Network Support Unit, to present the findings of her final year project. Her project was entitled "A Chemical Analysis of Nasal Tanning Sprays and an Assessment of Melanotan II Products and their Availability in Ireland". The project and presentation was exceptionally well received by the HSE, Environmental Health Service. Lauryn has published some of her findings in the EHAI Yearbook 2023. On March 13, 2024, the students of the 3rd year BSc in Nutraceutical of the School of Food Science and Environmental Health in TU Dublin, Grangegorman heard a guest lecture from Naomi Anderson, the NPD Technologist of Gilfresh Produce Ltd., on a case study of how to implement the stage-gate model in NPD within a company as part of their Nutraceutical Product Development module. It was a great addition to the learning for the students, as they got to know a real-life scenario in NPD and they also enjoyed it. The event was organised by Dr. Lubna Ahmed.

Last Friday, 08 March, we had the privilege to participate in the Inspiring the Future STEM workshops event organised by Patricia Owens and her colleagues from the TU Dublin Access and Outreach Office, where we welcomed secondary school students from St. Aidan’s Community School, St Mark’s Community School, and Colaiste Pobal Fola.



At the School of Food Science and Environmental Health, Dr Tao Zhang led an engaging workshop "Food Science - Exploring Biodiversity in Nutraceutical Products." 🌱💊 This experience provided students with hands-on exploration into the fascinating world of biodiversity and its impact on nutraceutical products, sparking the students' curiosity and understanding of biodiversity, nutraceuticals, quality and quality control.



We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our final year BSc (Hons) Pharmaceutical Healthcare (TU875) students, Merin Jose and Ben Singleton, for their enthusiastic participation in enriching the workshop. 🙌🏼 Also, a big thank you to our dedicated laboratory technicians, Noel Grace and Gisele De Campos Pinto, whose unwavering support was invaluable.



In total, four STEM workshops were organised across the School of Food Science and Environmental Health, School of Chemical and BioPharmaceutical Sciences, and School of Physics, Clinical, and Optometric Sciences.

The Pharmacy Technician Studies Programme Team (TU654/TU657) recently interviewed the President of National Association of Hospital Pharmacy Technicians (NAHPT), Leonor O'Connor, who is also a Senior Pharmacy Technician at St. James's Hospital. On the 1st November 2023, NAHPT Ireland launched the Statutory Regulation Campaign for Hospital Pharmacy Technicians at Forsa Headquarters. 👇 here is Leonor's story and her insights on the pharmacy technician industry. 👍

On Tuesday 27th of February 2024, we were delighted to welcome twenty-six Leaving Cert
Home Economics students from two schools; Cabra Community School and St. Paul's CBS,
North Brunswick Street. The students participated in a Sensory Science workshop co designed
by teachers and lecturers in the school of Food Science and Environmental Health, TU Dublin.
The workshop aligned with the subject curriculum and allowed the students to use the sensory
and characterisation facilities in Grangegorman to enhance their learning. The students learned
to perform sensory tests in the food processing hall and sensory facilities under the guidance
of Dr. Lubna Ahmed and Dr. Graham O’Neill. The students conducted statistical analysis on
their results (n = 26) and also had an opportunity to use a number of different analytical
techniques to characterise their juice products. It was a huge benefit to both the students who
got to practically experience working in the lab but also to the teachers who were able to cover
elements of their curriculum using the state-of-the-art facilities of TU Dublin.

Many thanks to Anusha Aungnoo and Megan Duffy, Environmental Health Officers who came to visit and chat with the final year environmental health cohort. Anusha and Megan delivered a preparatory professional session on competency based interviews. They gave very practical and professional career advice and shared their experience of preparing for and completing competency based interviews. The students were thrilled with the session and the professional generosity of both Anusha and Megan. Congratulations to Megan and Anusha on their successful careers - both excellent role models for our environmental health students. The session was coordinated and facilitated by Sara Boyd, TU869 Programme Coordinator.

On Thursday 01 February 2024, we were delighted to welcome some students from Liberties and Dunboyne Colleges who are visiting TU Dublin and our School. The students were given the opportunity to know about the School and the programmes we offer, and tour the facilities, including chemistry, biology, microbiology, instrumentation and pharmacy dispensary laboratories. It was also a great opportunity for the visiting students to meet the School Management (Dr Julie Dunne), the Pharmacy Technician Programme Team (Dr Tao Zhang, Dr Seana Hogan and Dr Denis O’Shea), pharmacy technician alumnus (Simon Tee-Carter, current final year BSc (Hons) Pharmaceutical Healthcare student), PhD student (Michail Saragatsis, pharmacist) and the first year Pharmacy Technician class. The students have a great passion for the pharmacy technician programme and were pleased to hear about various career options, progression routes as well as our alumnus Simon’s interesting and motivational story. We would like to wish them the very best of luck in their CAO applications. We look forward to seeing their smiling faces on our beautiful campus in September.
