What does the Flower of the Dead actually smell like? 🇲🇽

Cempasúchil, the iconic Mexican marigold, is far stranger olfactively than its exuberant orange flowers might suggest.

Rather than a conventional sweet floral, Tagetes can reveal sharp green, herbal, bitter and citrus-like facets. Its aromatic chemistry includes compounds such as ocimenes, tagetones and limonene, part of what gives the plant its unmistakable character.

Mexico is home to remarkable diversity within the Tagetes genus, and these flowers are not only culturally significant; they also present fascinating possibilities and challenges for the perfumer.

Natural Tagetes extracts require extremely careful use, including compliance with IFRA restrictions relating to phototoxicity.

In perfumery, what you smell in the first few minutes may be very different from what remains an hour, four hours, or a day, later.

Some materials open bright and volatile before revealing something softer. Others become warmer, drier, sweeter, earthier or far more complex as they develop on the blotter.
