The B.Tech students of the B.Tech.–M.Tech. (Integrated) Degree Programme in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology visited Assam Bioethanol Private Limited (ABEPL) on 23rd May, 2026, as part of the practical component of the “Entrepreneurship Development and Business Management” course.

During the visit, the students attended insightful sessions delivered by ABEPL experts Mr. Massod Iqbal, Ms. Kashmiri Goswami, Dr. Amarjit Rajbongshi, and Dr. Pranab Kumar Nath on the bioethanol production system and the role of fermenters in the production process.

The experts highlighted the importance of the BioE3 Policy, which emphasizes the contribution of biotechnology to the economy, environment, and employment sectors, and discussed the promising opportunities it will create for trained biotechnology graduates in the coming years.

The visit also provided students with practical exposure to biorefinery operations, where biological resources such as bamboo are transformed into valuable industrial products including bioethanol, biochemicals, and other bio-based products.

The ABEPL team appreciated the enthusiasm, curiosity, and insightful questions raised by the students regarding bioethanol production and industrial biotechnology. They encouraged the students to consider their curriculum as a toolkit for addressing real-world industrial and sustainability challenges and advised them to cultivate the habits of observation, inquiry, documentation, and practical application of knowledge.

Such industry-academia interactions greatly enrich students’ learning experiences and help bridge the gap between classroom teaching and industrial applications.

In a significant step towards promoting millet-based nutrition and sustainable food innovations, the Department of Food and Nutrition, College of Community Science (CCSc), Assam Agricultural University, signed a Non-Exclusive Licensing Agreement with the
Organization of Universal Mankind (OUM) on 21 st May’2026 for the production, marketing, distribution, and sale of the “Ready-to-Cook Foxtail Millet Khichdi Mix” across India.
The “Ready-to-Cook Foxtail Millet Khichdi Mix” is a scientifically developed nutritious formulation created under the World Bank-financed Assam Agribusiness and Rural Transformation Project (APART) by the Department of Food and Nutrition, College of
Community Science, AAU. The product has been formulated using foxtail millet, pulses, and locally accepted ingredients to provide balanced nutrition, improved protein and fibre content, sensory acceptability, and ease of preparation. The agreement marks an important milestone in translating university-led research into commercially viable and socially impactful nutritional products.
The signing of the licencing agreement between AAU and OUM was initiated by Dr Sanjay Chetia, Director of Research, AAU in presence of Dr. Mamoni Das, Dean, College of Community Science; Dr. Niloy Borah, Principal Scientist, AAU; Dr. Moloya Gogoi, Head
(i/c), Department of Food and Nutrition along with other faculty members and scientists Dr. Nabaneeta Gogoi, Dr. Aradhana Barooah, and Dr. Priyanka Nath. Representatives from
OUM, including Mr. Sanjib Handique and Mr. Ashim Morom Deuri, were also present during the signing ceremony.
The licensing agreement is expected to facilitate wider outreach and commercialization of this millet-based product while promoting healthy dietary practices, nutritional security, and
sustainable food systems. The non-exclusive nature of the license will also enable the university to retain institutional rights for future research, extension activities, and further licensing initiatives.
This initiative aligns with national efforts to promote millets as nutritious and climate-resilient food crops and reflects Assam Agricultural University’s commitment to strengthening academia–industry partnerships for community nutrition, agribusiness
development, and food innovation.
