Report on the NEP Awareness Programme organized by the NEP Committee, Sikkim Government Science College (SGSC), Chakung
The NEP Awareness Programme organized by the NEP Committee of Sikkim Government Science College (SGSC), Chakung, was conducted today, 25 November 2025, at PM Shri Government Sr. Sec. School, Soreng. The programme was convened for school heads, teachers and higher education officials, with the principals of the Government Sr. Sec. Schools in attendance, and the meeting was headed by the Joint Director, Education Department, Soreng District Office, Government of Sikkim. The primary motive of the programme was to create awareness among Class XII outgoing students about the Four-Year Undergraduate (FYUG) course structure introduced under NEP 2020 and, in doing so, to familiarize stakeholders with the policy’s core elements and the opportunities it creates for learners.
The session focused on explaining the new academic structure and the multidisciplinary approach advocated by NEP 2020, emphasizing the flexibility of course choice available to students, the functioning of the credit transfer system, and the multiple entry–exit options built into the FYUG framework. The objectives also included motivating students to pursue higher education in a manner consistent with the vision and goals of NEP 2020, and equipping school leaders and teachers with the understanding necessary to guide outgoing students through decisions about higher education pathways.
In keeping with these objectives, Mr. Bivek Pradhan, NEP Coordinator, SGSC Chakung/Assistant Professor, Department of Physics, delivered a comprehensive and detailed presentation that addressed each of the programme’s focal points. His presentation outlined the structure of the FYUG programme, clarified how multidisciplinary study and flexible course combinations function in practice, explained the mechanics and benefits of the credit accumulation and transfer system (Academic Bank of Credits function), and detailed the practical implications of the exit options available to students. The presentation also highlighted how internships and skill-based learning components are integrated within the FYUG design to enhance employability and academic enrichment.
Following the presentation, a question-and-answer session provided an opportunity for attendees to raise specific queries and seek clarification on implementation issues, academic progression, and student guidance under the new system. The Q&A session was facilitated by Mr. Umesh Chettri, Joint Coordinator of the NEP Committee/Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics, who assisted in addressing technical and procedural questions and in providing practical advice for school-level counselling and student preparation.
The programme concluded with broadly positive responses from the participating principals and officials. The session strengthened participants’ understanding of NEP 2020’s FYUG structure and its associated features, and enhanced their capacity to counsel Class XII students regarding higher education choices. Overall, the NEP Awareness Programme held at Soreng Senior Secondary School on 25 November 2025 successfully met its stated objectives and constituted a valuable step toward aligning local educational guidance with the national vision set forth in NEP 2020.
