Responding to the intensification of “military operations” in Ukraine, Gaza, and Iran, this special issue of e-flux journal advocates for a return to a materialist genealogy of “operativism”—a concept that spans labor politics and scientific management throughout the twentieth century, from the Soviet avant-gardes to postwar cybernetics to modern warfare and the multiple interpretations of Harun Farocki’s “operational images.”

Monday Colloquium | IFP

📍 Nehru Room
🗓 24 February 2026
⏰ 3:00–4:00pm

On Tuesday, 24 February, Lorenzo De Lellis will give a talk at the French Institute of Pondicherry titled 𝘍𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘊𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘊𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘈𝘐 𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨: 𝘖𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘌𝘷𝘰𝘭𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘋𝘪𝘨𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘭 𝘓𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘳 𝘪𝘯 𝘐𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘢.

The lecture explores how India’s long-standing BPO and IT-enabled services sectors have laid the foundations for today’s AI data labeling and model training work. By tracing the continuity between call centers, platform-based labor and outsourcing infrastructures, it will offer a historical perspective on the evolution of digital labor in India.

The AIMODELS team is about to expand once again, as the call for 𝘁𝘄𝗼 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗱𝗼𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀 is now open!

The 𝗱𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 for applications is 𝟮 𝗙𝗲𝗯𝗿𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 𝗮𝘁 𝟭:𝟬𝟬 𝗽𝗺 𝗖𝗘𝗧, and the expected starting date for both positions is around 1 March 2026.

The 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗳𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 is associated with a research project investigating the role of the paradigms of intellectual disability and language pathology in the history of AI. Bringing together disability studies, translation studies, philosophy of language, and critical AI research, the project explores how notions of normalcy, ability, and intelligence have informed the design and evaluation of language technologies, including current Large Language Models.

The 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 is linked to a research project that investigates the history of AI and deep learning through an interdisciplinary and critical approach, examining the evolution of the statistical techniques at the core of AI and how they have shaped paradigms of the mind across disciplines. Drawing on methods from historical epistemology and ethnography, the project traces the circulation of ideas between computer science, statistics, psychology, and neuroscience, with particular attention to the Free Energy Principle and related constructs.

The symposium will examine why and how the current economic and geopolitical crisis has unfolded, focusing on the role of technological monopolies and in particular AI in a global scenario marked by trends of de-industrialisation and stagnation. On one level, we have witnessed the rise of global monopolies of knowledge extractivism and AI that threaten labour market, democratic order, and geopolitical equilibria between East and West.

On another level, however, it is necessary to interrogate whether these new technological monopolies (including AI) contribute to a crisis of valorisation rather than to productivity. Seeking an exit from the crisis, Silicon Valley companies have forged new alliances with authoritarian politics and have even enlisted AI models as battlegrounds of new cultural wars — a stark contradiction of their liberal rhetoric of the 1990s. The vector of the crisis appears increasingly politicised. Ultimately, the rise of authoritarian politics in Silicon Valley and beyond calls into question the narrative of neoliberalism as a liberation from the political
