We are strengthening our member institutions by supporting platforms that connect our members to practical economic thinking, build technical capacity, and deepen engagement with real policy issues.

KESA President Spencer Muhonja participated as a guest panellist at the 2nd Annual Symposium, held under the theme “Evaluating Kenya’s Digital Infrastructure and Its Implications on Youth Economic Participation.”

In her contribution, she challenged the view that opportunities are merely underutilised, stating that, “the question is not whether opportunities exist, but whether the structure of our economy can generate enough of them.”

She spoke to the role continues to play in expanding access to meaningful engagement through initiatives such as PowerTalks, skill-based webinars, and a growing focus on research and publication.

These efforts are intended to move students beyond theoretical learning into spaces where they can build competence and participate more effectively in economic discussions.

The conversation pointed to a broader reality: addressing youth unemployment requires more than improving access to information. It calls for sustained economic expansion that can support job creation at the scale required.

KESA remains committed to supporting its member institutions through such engagements, while advancing policy advocacy that promotes predictable and stable economic conditions necessary for investment, job creation, and long-term growth.

We are building a pipeline of economically grounded thinkers by exposing students to how markets work, how decisions are made, and how policy shapes outcomes.

From 9th to 22nd April, partnered with the International Economics Olympiad–Kenya to deliver in-person training sessions ahead of the July competition in Suzhou, China.

The programme brought together high school students from across the country, selected for their ability and readiness to engage with economics at an advanced level.

The sessions centred on applied economic thinking with a focus on building clear, defensible reasoning.

Students analysed market behaviour, examined price movements, assessed the impact of policy decisions, and worked through case studies using concepts such as demand and supply, elasticity, efficiency, and market structures.

This forms part of hashtag ’s broader approach to capacity building, equipping students to break down economic and business problems with structure and precision.

The intention is to prepare young people who can interpret data, evaluate trade-offs, and contribute meaningfully in academic, policy, and professional spaces.

We acknowledge the contribution of Dr. Herein, International Economics Olympiad and the Aga Khan Academy, Nairobi, Alliance High School Old Boys Club, Othaya Boys, Buruburu Girls, Alliance Girls' High School, Merishaw School and all participating institutions.
