I wish more teachers would realise just how powerful practical activities really are. Yes, we’re all chasing time, trying to cover every concept in an already full curriculum… but at what cost?

How many children are being left behind because they never truly mastered one concept before we move on to the next? How many are nodding along, copying notes, doing the worksheets – but not understanding?

We need to slow down.
We need to stop rushing.
We need to give children the time to build, measure, sort, explore, experiment… to touch the learning before we expect them to write it down.

Concrete, hands-on lessons don’t “waste time” — they build the foundation that allows real learning to happen. When children understand something deeply, everything else becomes easier.

Let’s choose depth over speed. Understanding over coverage. Children over checklists.

Practical activities aren’t extra — they are essential.

අර්ථවත් අධ්‍යාපනයක් ගොඩනගන්නේ පොත්, විභාග, හෝ පන්තියේ පාඩම් පමණක් නොවේ. එය ගොඩනගන්නේ ගුරුවරුන්, සිසුන් සහ අධ්‍යාපනික පරිසරය තුළ පැවතින සබඳතා මතය.
ගුරුවරුන් තමන්ගේ සිසුන්ගේ හැඟීම්, පසුබැසීම, හැකියාවන්, සහ අදහස් ගෞරවයට ලක් කළ විට, සිසුන් තමා වටහා ගන්නා බවත්, විශ්වාස කරන බවත් හැඟෙයි. එමගින් ඔවුන්ට අධ්‍යාපනය සඳහා උනන්දුවක් සහ සතුටක් වර්ධනය වේ. එසේම සිසුන්ද තම ගුරුවරුන් ගෞරවය පළ කළ විට, විශ්වාසය කළ විට සහයෝගිතාවෙන් පිරුණු ඉගෙනීමේ පරිසරයක් උදාවෙයි.

නූතන අධ්‍යාපනය යනු සිසුන්ට පවා මත ප්‍රකාශ කිරීමට, විවේචනය කිරීමට සහ පර්යේෂණය කිරීමට ඉඩදෙන ක්‍රියාවලියක්. මෙවැනි පරිසරයක් තුළ, ගුරුවරයා උගන්වන්නාට වඩා මඟපෙන්වන්නෙක් වීමේ භූමිකාවට යටත් වන අතර, සිසුවාද තමාගේ අදහස් සහ විවරණ බෙදාගන්නා සහායදායකයකු බවට පත්වේ. මේ හැම දෙයකටම පදනම වන්නේ අන් අයෙකුගේ අදහසට අගය දැක්වීමය.

1. ශාරීරික අවශ්‍යතා (Physiological Needs)
• දරුවන්ට ආහාරය, ජලය, නින්ද සහ නිසි ලෙස අවශ්‍ය වේ.

2. ආරක්ෂාවේ අවශ්‍යතා (Safety Needs)
• දරුවන්ට ආරක්ෂිත හා ස්ථාවර පරිසරයක් අවශ්‍ය වේ. බියකරු පරිසරයක් හෝ ඇහිරීම් ඇති අවස්ථාවක් ඇත්නම් ඉගෙනීම බාධා වේ.
• සාධාරණ නීති, ආදරෙයෙන් පිරුණු ගුරුවරුන් සහ ආරක්ෂිත පරිසරය ලබා දීම වැදගත්ය.

3. ආදරය සහ අයත්භාවය (Love and Belongingness Needs)
• දරුවන්ට මිතුරන් සහ ගුරුවරුන් සමඟ සබඳතා ගොඩනගා ගැනීමට අවශ්‍ය වේ.

5. සංපූර්ණභාවය (Self-Actualization)
• මෙහිදී දරුවාට තම හැකියාවන් ව්‍යාප්ත කරගෙන ගෝලීය වශයෙන් වර්ධනය වීමට අවශ්‍යතාවය ඇති වේ.

We can’t expect students to analyze, create, or problem-solve if they’re hungry, anxious, or feel unsafe. Studies show students with unmet basic needs are twice as likely to underperform in core subjects.
And yet, we often rush to push Bloom’s Taxonomy — without checking if Maslow’s needs are met.
👉 Safety before success.
👉 Connection before comprehension.
👉 Care before curriculum.

When students feel supported, they don’t just learn — they thrive.

Great Opportunity

The Ministry of Education has called for applications for student admissions to Grade 12 under the Advanced Level Vocational Stream for the 2025 academic year.

The admission process does not consider whether a student has passed or failed the G.C.E. Ordinary Level (O/L) examination, making it accessible to a wider group of students.

Under this stream, students who enroll in Grade 12 will proceed to complete a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) Level 04 course in Grade 13, across one of 28 vocational subject areas including Health & Social Care, Fashion Designing, Graphic Designing, Automobile Studies, Construction Studies, Computer Hardware & Networking, and more.
