The major objective of this programme is to equip students with the theory and application of business economics in order to prepare them for careers that demand training in both economics and management. The other objectives of the programme include the provision of modern academic knowledge, skills and attitudes of business economics, as well as an exposure to the current practices in business e

Business economists who are well trained in economics and quantitative techniques along with management-oriented subjects play a crucial role in modern business organizations, particularly in the area of business forecasting, research and analysis. Business planning is critical to survival in the increasingly competitive and globalize business environment. The programme in Business Economics has been designed to train graduates to undertake these increasingly important roles.

Students of the Department of Business Economics participated in the Spring Language and Cultural Programme 2026, a ten-day international programme hosted by Zhejiang Shuren University in Hangzhou, China.

The Department was represented by Sadini Silva, Vidhushi Samarakkodi, Lihini Harischandra, Sanuri Perera, Abilakshi Herath, Savindu Wijetilleke, and Supun Rasanjana.

The programme provided students with valuable international exposure through Chinese language learning sessions, cultural exchange, industry visits, and practical learning experiences.

It was conducted as part of the longstanding academic relationship between Zhejiang Shuren University and the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, which has continued to create international learning opportunities for our undergraduates.

Professor Siriwardhane has served the Department with dedication for over two decades, contributing to teaching, research, academic administration, and editorial leadership.

The special international workshop on “Health Economic Analysis for Evidence-Driven Health Policies”, organised with the aim of guiding health policymaking in Sri Lanka towards a scientific path based on data and evidence, was held at the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce, University of Sri Jayewardenepura on 3rd and 4th March 2026.

The programme was organised by the Department of Business Economics, Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Mass Media, Sri Lanka and the World Bank Group.

The inaugural session of the workshop commenced with the welcome address delivered by Professor Dushan Jayawickrama, Dean of the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce. Opening remarks were delivered by Dr. Aparna Somanathan, Training Manager, World Bank, and Senior Professor Sampath Amaratunga, Professor Chair, Department of Business Economics.

A special highlight of the event was the official launch of the Health Economics Track of the MSc in Business Economics by the Department.

The sessions conducted during the two-day programme were delivered by several distinguished scholars representing the World Bank, the Ministry of Health and Mass Media, and universities from around the world. The active participation of medical professionals and administrators from the healthcare sector significantly contributed to the overall success of the event.

The Department of Business Economics successfully hosted the 7th Annual Conference on Business Economics (ACBE) 2026 on Monday, 16 February 2026, as part of the 22nd International Conference on Business Management (ICBM), Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce.

The conference served as a dedicated platform for undergraduate research, where 23 young scholars of the Department presented their research findings on a range of contemporary economic issues.

ACBE 2026 provided students with the opportunity to present their undergraduate research work in a formal academic setting, receive constructive feedback, and engage in scholarly discussions with faculty members and peers.

The Department extends its appreciation to the organising committee, review panel, and all contributors who ensured the successful ex*****on of the conference.

We congratulate all presenters for their dedication and commendable efforts in advancing undergraduate research within the discipline of Business Economics.
