The Faculty of Medicine (FMD) (formerly the Faculty of Health Sciences) at the University of Macau (UM) organised two sessions of the Health Sciences Summer Camp, attracting more than 70 senior secondary school students from 35 schools across Macao. Through a combination of theoretical learning and hands-on laboratory experience, the camps enabled participants to learn more about cutting-edge knowledge and research techniques in biomedical sciences, and sparked their interest in scientific research and innovation as they explored the mysteries of life sciences. A team of undergraduate students from the Faculty of Medicine (FMD) (formerly the Faculty of Health Sciences) at the University of Macau (UM) won a first prize at the 11th National College Students Life Sciences Competition (Scientific Inquiry Category). The award recognised the team’s innovative therapeutic strategy for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which integrates biomedical science with intelligent drug delivery technologies. The team was also selected to present their research at a project roadshow during the closing ceremony, showcasing the research capabilities, innovative spirit, and academic presentation skills of UM students. As a comprehensive research-oriented public university of international standing in Macao, the University of Macau (UM) continues to optimise its academic structure and strengthen its capacities in technology and innovation. Five science and technology faculties and two research institutes commenced operations today (1 August), namely the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Information Science and Computing, the Faculty of Engineering, the Faculty of Science, the Faculty of Design, the Institute of Smart City Technologies, and the Institute of Artificial Intelligence and Brain Sciences. The strategic restructuring of academic disciplines and research platforms signifies UM’s continuous expansion in technology and innovation. #澳大 五大科技類學院及兩所前沿研究院,即醫學院、信息學院、工學院、理學院、設計學院,以及智慧城市技術研究院、人工智能與腦科學研究院8月1日起正式投入運作。連同新設的五個學院,澳大現有十個學院;待正在籌備的生命科學研究院和臨床及轉化醫學研究院成立後,澳大將建成十一所前沿研究院。

On 1 August, five science and technology faculties and two research institutes at commenced operations, namely the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Information Science and Computing, the Faculty of Engineering, the Faculty of Science, the Faculty of Design, the Institute of Smart City Technologies, and the Institute of Artificial Intelligence and Brain Sciences.
Following the establishment of the five new faculties, UM now has a total of ten faculties. The university is also progressing with the establishment of two additional research institutes, one focusing on life sciences and the other on clinical and translational medicine. Once these two institutes are operational, UM will host a total of 11 research institutes.

A research team led by Associate Professor Lijun DI in the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) at the University of Macau (UM) has made a significant breakthrough in the study of therapeutic resistance in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). The team discovered a mechanism that enables cancer cells to evade ferroptosis—an iron-dependent form of cell death—thereby reducing the effectiveness of cancer treatments. The study identified a stress-induced antioxidant signalling axis that allows TNBC cells to evade ferroptosis, thereby driving tumour aggressiveness and treatment resistance. This discovery reveals a new therapeutic vulnerability in cancer cells and provides a promising therapeutic target for enhancing treatment response and developing more effective personalised therapies for patients with TNBC. The findings have been published in the prestigious international journal Journal of Experimental & Clinical Cancer Research. In celebration of the 45th anniversary of the University of Macau (UM), the UM Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS), in collaboration with the Dr Stanley Ho Medical Development Foundation (SHMDF), the Centre for Personalised Medicine (CPM) and St Anne’s College of the University of Oxford, hosted the 2026 Dr Stanley Ho Memorial Lecture. The event featured Tim Elliott, KIDANI Professor of Immuno-Oncology and director of the Centre for Immuno-Oncology at the University of Oxford, who delivered a lecture entitled ‘Personalising Vaccines for Cancer Prevention’. The lecture was well attended by UM faculty and students, researchers, healthcare professionals, and members of the public, who were keen to explore recent advances in cancer immunology and the potential of personalised vaccines for cancer prevention. A research team led by Kathy Qian LUO, Professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) at the University of Macau (UM), has uncovered the molecular pathway behind a deadly paradox in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). Fluid shear stress (SS), the mechanical force exerted by blood flow on circulating cancer cells, is known to kill many tumour cells during metastasis. However, it also causes surviving cells to become more aggressive. The study shows that brief exposure to pulsatile shear stress (SS) rapidly increases the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) through calcium channels, leading to the activation of the transcription factor FOS and enhanced metastatic potential, thereby identifying the SS-calcium channel-ROS-FOS axis as a promising therapeutic target for combating the spread of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). The research findings have been published in the international journal International Journal of Biological Sciences.
