Additive manufacturing (3D printing) is not new, but the knowledge of how to get the 3D-printed part certified for aerospace use is still in progress. I have tasked my student to explore the certification of radio k***s. The subject is the radio k***s was a problem given to me by a friend working on a military aircraft MRO, who has problems purchasing replacement k***s due to obsolete components. Based on the student's work, we have learned that for design the process will be;
1. Conceptual design (solid or non-solid)
2. Load is from the standard of MIL-STD - 1348 MILITARY STANDARD K***S, CONTROL
3. We may measure the k***s on the flight crew finger forces>
4. Selection of materials
5. Establish the engineering values from coupon tests
6. 3D model design
7. use the 3D model for FEM and FEA analysis
8. determine the breaking stress compared with the engineering value from the test
9. make the k***s using 3D printing
10. conduct breaking test for proof loading
