INFORMM Strengthens Industry Collaboration with Thermo Scientific for MDBD 2026

PENANG, 29 April 2026 – The Institute for Research in Molecular Medicine (INFORMM), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), successfully conducted a strategic discussion session with representatives from Thermo Fisher Scientific to advance planning for the upcoming International Conference on Molecular Diagnostics and Biomarker Discovery (MDBD) 2026.

The session was attended by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aziah Ismail (Director, INFORMM), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Venugopal Balakrishnan (Deputy Director), and members of the MDBD organising committee (Dr. Kumitaa Theva Dass, Dr Norsyahida Ariffin, Dr Lai Ngit Sin and Mrs. Dyana Zakria), alongside Thermo Scientific representatives Ms. Imelia Wong (Country Manager) and Dr. Andrian Yeo Eng Hwa (Head of Biosciene Division).

The discussion focused on shaping MDBD 2026 into a high-impact platform that integrates academic excellence with industry innovation. Scheduled tentatively for 19–20 August 2026, the conference will feature a comprehensive programme comprising pre-conference hands-on workshops, scientific presentations, industry-led technical sessions, and a dedicated forum on translational diagnostics.

A key highlight of the meeting was the alignment on strengthening industry–academic collaboration, particularly through Thermo Scientific’s potential role in providing advanced instrumentation, technical expertise, and application-driven training. The collaboration is envisioned to extend beyond the conference into a sustainable partnership model, including shared laboratory services and capacity-building initiatives.

The proposed programme will emphasise practical and reproducible outcomes, with workshops designed to equip participants with hands-on skills in emerging diagnostic technologies such as CRISPR and antibody-based platforms. In addition, live instrument demonstrations and technical sessions will offer participants direct exposure to cutting-edge solutions in molecular diagnostics.

The meeting also addressed key operational aspects, including speaker selection, marketing strategies, sponsorship opportunities, and the development of technical materials. Both parties agreed on the importance of producing meaningful outputs such as technical bulletins, scientific posters, and potential publication materials to maximise the conference’s impact.

Importantly, MDBD 2026 will serve as a strategic launchpad for long-term collaboration, supporting INFORMM’s role as a Higher Institution Centre of Excellence (HICoE) in Diagnostics Platforms. The partnership aims to foster innovation, enhance research translation, and strengthen Malaysia’s position in molecular diagnostics and biomarker discovery.

The session concluded with a shared commitment to deliver a high-quality, industry-engaged conference that not only advances scientific knowledge but also builds sustainable networks for future collaboration.

USM Hosts Taiwan–Malaysia Biomedical Forum 2026, Integrating Biomedical Innovation with Advanced Sensing Technologies

PENANG, 14 April 2026 – Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), through the Institute for Research in Molecular Medicine (INFORMM) in collaboration with the Collaborative Microelectronic Design Excellence Centre (CEDEC), successfully hosted the Taiwan–Malaysia Biomedical Forum 2026, reinforcing strategic collaboration between Malaysia and Taiwan in next-generation biomedical innovation.

The forum uniquely positioned INFORMM as the driver of biomedical applications and translational diagnostics, complemented by CEDEC’s expertise in microelectronic sensing tools and system design, forming a powerful integration of biology and engineering. This convergence reflects an emerging paradigm where advanced sensing technologies enable precision diagnostics, real-time monitoring, and scalable healthcare solutions.

The programme began with a high-level engagement between the Taiwan delegation and USM’s top management, followed by keynote addresses by Prof. Dr. Dar-Bin Shieh, Senior Vice President of National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU), and Prof. Dr. Habibah A. Wahab, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation), USM. Scientific sessions featured leading contributions from NSRRC Taiwan, INFORMM, and CEDEC, covering areas such as synchrotron-enabled biomedical analysis, electrochemical biosensors, and digital microfluidics platforms.

Prof. Dr. Habibah A. Wahab highlighted the importance of this integration, stating, “INFORMM’s strength in biomedical research, when synergised with CEDEC’s capabilities in sensing technologies and microelectronics, creates a robust ecosystem for translational diagnostics and digital health innovation.”

Echoing this, Prof. Dr. Dar-Bin Shieh remarked, “The future of healthcare lies in the seamless integration of nano-technology, AI, and sensing platforms. Collaborative efforts like this will accelerate the development of high-impact, deployable biomedical solutions.”

A key highlight of the forum was the demonstration of how CEDEC’s microelectronic and sensor design capabilities can be translated into high-performance biosensing platforms, supporting INFORMM’s work in molecular diagnostics, biomarker detection, and disease monitoring.

The forum concluded with a multidisciplinary panel discussion on next-generation biomedical challenges, followed by strategic industry visits to Silterra Malaysia, SIRIM Berhad, and the Malaysian Institute of Pharmaceuticals and Nutraceuticals (IPharm), reinforcing the pathway from research to industry adoption.

This initiative marks a significant step in strengthening Taiwan–Malaysia partnerships, positioning USM, INFORMM, and CEDEC at the forefront of integrated biomedical and sensing technology innovation, with strong potential for collaborative research, talent exchange, and global impact.
