"SUBSIDY IS GONE" BUT PROMISES AREN'T; How Nigeria Abondoned its BEA and National Award Scheme Beneficiaries

By Kabiru Datti Na Malanta
[email protected]

"When a government betrays the trust of it's citizens, it betrays its own legitimacy" - Edmund Burke

It is indeed ridiculous, disappointing, and sadly to read that the Federal Government recently approved only four billion Naira (N4bn) for the payment of outstanding allowances under the Bilateral Education Agreement (BEA) programme, yet thousands of students under the Federal Scholarship National Award Scheme remain abandoned after years of neglect.

Funny, N4bn for what specifically when huge cumulative backlogs still exist?

This approval did not happen overnight. It came after sustained pressure, consultations, media outrage, confrontation, and emotional appeals by parents and beneficiaries studying abroad who cried out over the governmentโ€™s continued abandonment. Many of those students were stranded in foreign countries without allowances, battling humiliation and uncertainty. Alas, What a government do we have in Nigeria?

Although that is not commendable considering the cumulative backlogs, but then What about the thousands of Nigerian students under the Federal Scholarship National Award Scheme who have also been abandoned in silence?

For nearly two years now, beneficiaries under the National Award Scheme have not been paid. And yet, the government continues to release irrelevant presses on educational reforms, title conferment and so on.

Even more disappointing is the fact that last year the Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Education announcement over 50% increment in the National Award Scheme, which till date has not been implemented as no single beneficiary was paid. In the same year, the Federal Government went ahead to award new beneficiaries under the "Nigerian Scholarship Award". The Beneficiaries were jubilating, believing that perhaps merit and academic excellence still had value in this country. Alas, till date, none of those beneficiaries has received a penny. Not one!.

Now, 2026 is here; which means that there are outstanding backlogs for 2024, 2025, and now 2026. Remember also, throughout 2025, no student was awarded despite the application proccess, and no explanation was given!

Was the National Award Scheme allocation omitted from the budget or is education simply no longer considered a priority by this administration?

The most painful aspect of this crisis is not even the delay itself but the attitude of the authorities responsible for handling the matter. The silence. The indifference. The absence of urgency.

What exactly is the message being sent to students?

That promises made by government should never be trusted?

That Nigerian students are only remembered during campaigns and forgotten immediately after elections?

Well, as another electoral season gradually approaches, we, the students and youths are watching carefully. Governments must understand that we are no longer silent observers. We see everything. We remember every promise. We remember every negligence!!!

The Kaduna State Government has expressed strong appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Executive Council for approving major infrastructure projects worth over โ‚ฆ1.18 trillion in the state.

In a statement, Governor Uba Sani described the projects as transformative, highlighting the planned Kaduna Light Rail systemโ€”a 50-kilometre network linking key parts of the stateโ€”as a landmark initiative valued at about โ‚ฆ1 trillion.

He also noted the approval of the โ‚ฆ178 billion reconstruction of the Mandoโ€“Kadunaโ€“Birnin Gwari road, describing it as critical to improving security, connectivity, and economic activities in the region.

According to the governor, the projects will enhance transportation, boost economic growth, and reinforce Kadunaโ€™s position as a key logistics hub in Northern Nigeria. He added that the state government remains committed to ensuring effective implementation.

The statement further emphasized that the Federal Governmentโ€™s support reflects confidence in Kadunaโ€™s development agenda and commitment to equitable national growth.

The saddest thing in Nigeria is that those you're trying to fight for over bad governance issue will be the first set of people that will mock and betray you.
And the worst of it is that, their eyes are cemented, and their hearts locked ๐Ÿ”’. So they always choose to jubilate and rally behind those who bring about the bad governance just because of N10,000 and a cup of rice๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ

This is indeed provoking.

Shame on the major Hausa film industry, Kannywood for advertising and lying on what President Bola Tinubu didn't achieve!!!!

Just because of N10,000 and a bag of 3 mudus of rice?
How long will N10,000 last for your hand???When will Nigerians learn to be serious?

To our Hausa brothers and sisters, you need to call them to order!

KANO GOVERNOR RESIGNS HIS NNPP MEMBERSHIP...

PRESS RELEASE
23rd January 2026

Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has formally resigned his membership of the New Nigeria Peopleโ€™s Party (NNPP), citing deepening internal crises and the need to safeguard the broader interest of the people of Kano State.

This was contained in a statement signed by the governorโ€™s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa on Friday.

The Governor, in a letter addressed to the Chairman of Diso-Chiranchi Ward, NNPP, Gwale Local Government Area, officially communicated his decision to withdraw from the party with effect from Friday 23rd January 2026.

โ€œI write with a deep sense of gratitude to formally notify the leadership of the New Nigeria Peopleโ€™s Party (NNPP) of my decision to resign my membership of the party, with effect from Friday, 23rd, January 2026.โ€

Governor Yusuf expressed appreciation to the party for the platform and support extended to him throughout his political engagement with the NNPP.

โ€œI remain sincerely appreciative of the opportunity given to me by the party, its leadership, and members across Kano State to be part of its political journey since 2022, as well as the support, goodwill, and cooperation extended to me during my time in the party.โ€

He pointed to persistent internal disputes and legal challenges that have continued to unsettle the partyโ€™s structure nationwide.

โ€œIn recent times, the party has been confronted with persistent internal challenges arising from leadership disagreements and ongoing legal processes, many of which are presently before the courts for judicial determination.โ€

According to the Governor, the internal disagreements have widened divisions and weakened cohesion within the party.

โ€œThe growing disenfranchisement among party members has created deep divisions within the party structure, resulting in cracks that appear increasingly irreconcilable and hav

RE: IMPLEMENTATION OF 35% AND 23.5% SALARY INCREMENT FOR STAFF OF TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS

Kindly refer to the above and the documents circulating in social media on the salary increment. Recall that this was the award by the Federal Government during our Re-negotiation with the Nimi Brigg's Committee. Note that our union rejected the offer because it came outside the rubrics of the collective bargaining process of true negotiations.

In our last meeting with the Ministers of Education on the 3rd of September, 2023, they promised to implement the award in the interim pending the conclusion of the FGN/ASUU 2009 re-negotiation agreement.

Comrades, please note that this is an Award and not a negotiated salary increment. We shall continue to struggle for an appropriate Salary Scale for our Members through Collective Bargaining Principles.

Be rest assured that the struggle continues. A people united can never be defeated.
