Our great Faculty of Agriculture recently hosted the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi. It was indeed a memorable occasion.

During the visit, the Vice-Chancellor toured several facilities within the Faculty, including the Research Farm and the Demonstration Farm. He reiterated his commitment to ensuring that the Faculty continues to function effectively, emphasizing that Agriculture remains the backbone of the University and the nation at large. He further assured us that any contribution aimed at advancing the Faculty and placing it where it rightly belongs will always receive the full support of his administration.

During the visit, the President of NAAS, Comr. Okoro Miracle Ebube, on behalf of the Swiss students and farm hands, appealed to the Vice-Chancellor for the provision of a bus to convey students to the Research Farm on a daily basis, as the stress of commuting there has greatly increased. In response, the Vice-Chancellor assured the NAAS President that the request would be considered and addressed.

At the climax of the event, the Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Akeem Oyerinde, alongside the NAAS President, Comr. Okoro Miracle Ebube, and other distinguished staff members of the Faculty of Agriculture, presented the Vice-Chancellor with an Award of Merit in appreciation of his courtesy visit and his continued show of concern and support for the Faculty.

🌱 Why Students Should Study Agriculture

Agriculture is not “local farming” — it is food, business, technology, and money.
In a country like Nigeria, food demand keeps increasing. If young people don’t study agriculture, who will feed the future?

Agriculture today involves:
✨Modern technology
✨Agribusiness and entrepreneurship
✨Job creation
✨Food security

It is one of the few courses that allows students to create wealth, not just look for jobs.
Encouraging students to study agriculture means: ✔ Fighting hunger
✔ Reducing unemployment
✔ Building future entrepreneurs
Agriculture is not a last option — it is a smart option. 🌾

🚨 *BOOST YOUR YIELD! 🌾*

5 smart says to improve your soil fertility

- *1. Feed it organic goodness* - Mix compost or animal waste into your soil. It's like a healthy meal for your land!

- *2. Rotate your crops* - Don't make your soil do the same job every season. Rotate crops to keep it balanced.

- *3. Fertilize with care* - Use fertilizers wisely, like giving your soil a boost when it needs it.

- *4. Mulch like a pro* - Cover your soil with leaves or straw. It's like putting a blanket on it to keep moisture in!

- *5. Cover crops are cool* - Plant legumes or grasses to protect and enrich your soil.

Healthy soil, healthy life🖼️

FARMER VS HERDER

WHO IS REALLY AT WAR?
A farmer wakes up to protect his crops.
A herder wakes up to protect his cattle.
Both are just trying to eat.
Both depend on the land.
Yet somehow…
they keep clashing.
Is it really farmer vs herder?
Or poor systems forcing two livelihoods to collide?
No clear grazing routes.
No clear land use plans.
No real conversation.
When systems fail, people fight.
👉 Who should fix this first: government policies, community dialogue, or modern grazing systems?

IF GMOs ARE THE FUTURE, WHO PROTECTS THE FARMER?
Behind every seed is a farmer.
A person taking risks, season after season.
GMOs promise better harvests and food security.
But for many farmers, especially smallholders, one question remains:
👉 Who stands with the farmer?
If seeds can no longer be saved…
If decisions move from the farm to contracts and policies…
If access depends on money and permission…
Then progress must be careful, not careless.
Technology should work with farmers, not over them.
And any future that ignores the farmer’s voice is incomplete.
👉 Who should protect farmers in a GMO-driven future: government, farmer associations, or the companies themselves?

Africa needs more food.
But should it come from genetically modified crops?
Supporters say GMOs:
Increase yield
Resist pests
Reduce food shortages
Critics say:
Long-term effects are uncertain
Farmers may lose seed independence
Control shifts from farmers to corporations
Here’s the uncomfortable truth:
Africa cannot avoid this conversation anymore.
GMOs are already part of the global food system.
The real question is not if —
but how, where, and who controls it.

👉 Should Africa embrace GMO foods or reject them completely?
Support or Oppose?

As some of you rightly said yesterday, information and timing are intertwined. They’re essential factors a farmer should acquire to be able to channel their capital. Capital is a factor that an agripreneur must have to venture into an agribusiness. And without capital, a farmer cannot bring to life the knowledge acquired.

In such cases should a farmer get a loan to start their agribusiness?"

AGRICULTURE FAILS QUIETLY

A farmer can do everything right —
good seeds, proper feeding, long hours —
and still fail.
Not because effort is missing,
but because information arrives too late or not at all.
In agriculture, timing is everything.
One wrong decision at the wrong time
can erase an entire season.
This is why agriculture is not just about farming.
It is about access to the right knowledge, at the right moment.
👉 What decision do you think matters most in farming: timing, capital, or information?
