ICYMI: Nigeria’s Coastal Crisis – Our Investigation

Since October, Premium Times and Pluboard have published investigations into Nigeria’s coastal life and capture fisheries, a sector vital to the nation's food security but so dangerously neglected.

Part I of the series shows how small-scale fishers and women traders, already struggling with climate pressures, face persistent piracy and sea robbery attacks. The attacks have continued despite official claims that the waters are now secure. On the ground, we found frequent attacks, stolen engines, kidnappings, deaths, and communities left with almost no state protection.

Part II exposes a deeper issue: Nigeria has no clear policy, credit system, or support structure for the millions who drive its coastal and artisanal fisheries sector.

These workers operate outside formal planning yet are central to national nutrition and local economies. The reports show that insecurity is only one piece of a wider governance vacuum threatening Nigeria’s coastal future.
