ESUT Professor Nzeribe Makes History, Charts Path for AI-Driven Healthcare in Landmark Inaugural Lecture
ESUT Agbani, Enugu Nigeria – November 6, 2025
In a landmark event that celebrated academic excellence and shattered glass ceilings, Professor Nnenna Harmony Nwobodo Nzeribe of the Department of Computer Engineering delivered the 52nd Inaugural Lecture of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), presenting a visionary blueprint for integrating advanced engineering into Nigeria's healthcare system.
The historic lecture, held at the packed His Excellency Dr. Peter Ndubisi Mbah Multipurpose Auditorium, was as much a celebration of a personal milestone as it was an academic discourse. Professor Nzeribe, a trailblazer in her field, is the first female Professor in the Department of Computer Engineering, the second female Professor in the entire Faculty of Engineering, and the first academic to deliver an inaugural lecture from her department.
Speaking on the compelling topic, “Engineering Solutions for a Healthier Tomorrow,” Professor Nzeribe captivated the audience of academia, industry leaders, and students with a powerful presentation. She detailed how innovations in Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and Data Analytics are poised to revolutionize disease prediction, diagnosis, and treatment, particularly in resource-constrained settings like Nigeria.
"A healthier tomorrow is not a distant dream; it is an engineering project waiting to be built," Professor Nzeribe declared. "We are at a pivotal moment where smart algorithms can predict disease outbreaks, wearable devices can monitor vital signs in real-time, and telemedicine platforms can bridge the gap between rural patients and specialist doctors. The future of Nigerian healthcare is intelligent, predictive, and personalized, and it is engineers who will lay the foundational infrastructure."
The Vice-Chancellor of ESUT, along with the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and the Head of the Department of Computer Engineering, hailed Professor Nzeribe as a role model and a source of immense pride for the institution. They emphasized that her journey and scholarly work embody the university's core mandate as a centre for science and technology innovation.
The event was not just an academic ceremony but a profound inspiration, especially for young female students in STEM fields, demonstrating that with brilliance and determination, they can reach the pinnacle of any profession. Professor Nzeribe’s lecture is expected to spark new interdisciplinary collaborations between the engineering and medical sectors, positioning ESUT at the forefront of technological solutions for national development.
