IKIRUN HEALTH TECHNOLOGY INTENSIFIES PUBLIC HEALTH ADVOCACY, TAKES ANTI-DRUG ABUSE CAMPAIGN TO AKINORUN GRAMMAR SCHOOL

As part of its unwavering commitment to community service, youth development, and public health promotion, Ikirun College of Health Technology has again demonstrated its leadership in health education through a sensitisation campaign against drug abuse organised for students of Akinorun Grammar School.

The outreach programme, carried out on Friday, 8th May, 2026 by students of Public Health Technology Department, focused on educating secondary school students on the dangers of substance abuse, the devastating effects of hard drugs, and the importance of resisting peer pressure among youths.

Represented by the Head of Department, Ms Moshudaht Babalola, the Rector/Chief Academic Officer of the college, Mr. Salaudeen Oyewale said the initiative was organised in response to the increasing rate of drug abuse among young people in society.

According to him, "beyond academic training, Ikirun College of Health Technology remains committed to producing health professionals who are equipped with practical knowledge and a strong passion for community impact and public enlightenment."

"This institution believes that preventive health education remains one of the most effective ways of addressing social and health-related challenges facing the younger generation."

During the sensitisation exercise, educational pamphlets containing useful information on drug abuse and its harmful consequences were distributed to students, while interactive sessions were also held to enlighten participants on making positive life decisions and avoiding harmful influences.

The programme equally featured reward presentations to two outstanding students who excelled during the interactive session, further encouraging active participation and learning among students.

The management of Ikirun College of Health Technology reaffirmed the institutionโ€™s commitment to academic excellence, practical health training, and impactful community engagement aimed at building a healthier and more informed society.

Since it's inception, the institution has continued to distinguish itself as one of the leading health institutions dedicated to training competent healthcare professionals while contributing meaningfully to societal development through regular public health interventions and enlightenment campaigns.

The Course That Works Even When You Are Not In a Hospital ๐Ÿฅโžก๏ธ๐ŸŒ

Let me paint two pictures for you today.

Picture One: You graduate as a Nurse. You start applying for jobs. Almost every opportunity requires you to be physically present in a clinic, ward, or hospital. Your career is tied to a building. Your growth depends on that building. If the hospital has problems โ€” your career feels it too.

Picture Two: You graduate with an ND in Public Health Technology. Your office could be a local government secretariat. It could be an NGO field office. It could be a research center. It could be a rural community where you are running a maternal health campaign. It could even be a desk at the World Health Organization someday. *Your career is not tied to one place.

That second picture โ€” that is the life Public Health Technology offers you.

And here is something that should excite every young Nigerian in this group right now. The world just went through a pandemic. Nigeria is still battling malaria, cholera, malnutrition, tuberculosis, and poor sanitation in many communities. The government knows it. International organizations know it. And they are all looking for trained *Public Health Technologists* to help fix it.

You are not late. You are actually arriving at exactly the right time.

At Ikirun College of Health Technology, our ND Public Health Technology programme is structured to give you both the knowledge and the practical skills to step into this gap confidently. From your first year, you begin to understand how health systems work, how diseases spread, and how communities can be protected.

Nursing will always be respected. But not everyone who wants to serve in healthcare has to do it from a hospital bed.

Some of us are called to serve an entire generation.

That is what Public Health Technology does.

Come and be part of it. Ikirun COHT is ready for you. โœ…

Let Me Be Real With You Today ๐Ÿค

I have seen students make course choices based on three wrong reasons:

โŒ "My parents said so"
โŒ "My friend is doing it"
โŒ "The course sounds big"

And five years later, they are struggling in a career that was never really theirs.

So today I want to ask you a simple question โ€” do you actually know what you are signing up for?

If you choose Nursing, you are signing up for a life of shift work, night duties, handling patients in critical conditions, managing families who are in panic, and carrying emotional weight that most people cannot see. Again โ€” beautiful calling, but it requires a very specific kind of person.

Now if you choose ND Public Health Technology โ€” you are signing up for something equally powerful but completely different in nature.

You are choosing to become the person who prevents the crisis before it becomes one. The person in the field. The person communities trust. The person writing health reports that influence government decisions. The person training birth attendants in rural areas. The person detecting an outbreak before it kills hundreds.

PHT students graduate and enter the workforce faster than most health courses because the skills are immediately applicable. Nigeria's local governments, state health boards, NGOs, and international agencies are always looking for qualified Public Health Technologists.

And the academic journey does not stop at ND. You can climb all the way to a Masters degree in Public Health โ€” one of the most respected postgraduate qualifications in the world today.

So before you submit that form, ask yourself โ€” do I want to treat sickness or prevent it?

If your answer is prevention, community, impact, and flexibility โ€” then ND Public Health Technology at Ikirun College of Health Technology is already waiting for you.

Nobody Told You This About Public Health Technology ๐Ÿ‘‡

Every year, thousands of students rush into Nursing. The name sounds big. The uniform looks clean. The title "Registered Nurse" feels powerful. I understand the attraction completely.

But here is what happens after admission. The programme is one of the most demanding in any health institution. The clinical hours are long. The emotional weight is real. Students who entered because of pressure from family or because they just wanted a health course โ€” many of them regret it halfway.

I am not saying this to scare anyone. I am saying it so you choose with your eyes open.

Now let me tell you what nobody hypes enough โ€” ND Public Health Technology.

This programme prepares you to become a health problem solver. Not just for one patient on a hospital bed, but for thousands of people living in communities who don't even know they are at risk. You study epidemiology, environmental health, health promotion, disease prevention, and community outreach. You become the person governments and organizations call when there is a health crisis.

When COVID-19 hit Nigeria, it was not only doctors and nurses who fought it. Public Health professionals were on the front lines โ€” tracing contacts, educating communities, coordinating responses. That was Public Health Technology in action.

After your ND here at Ikirun College of Health Technology , the road ahead is wide open:

๐Ÿ‘‰ Progress to HND and degree level
๐Ÿ‘‰ Work with NCDC, State Ministries of Health, ๐Ÿ‘‰ World Bank health projects
๐Ÿ‘‰ Build a career in health education, sanitation policy, or disease surveillance
๐Ÿ‘‰ Even consult independently as a community health expert

Nursing is a great profession for the right person. But if you want impact, flexibility, and a career that grows with Nigeria's health challenges โ€” Public Health Technology is calling your name.

Think well. Choose well. Your future starts with this decision. ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Let's Talk About Your Future Honestly

Someone asked me yesterday โ€” "Sir, between Public Health Technology and Nursing, which one has more future?"

My answer was simple. Both have future, but Public Health Technology has more freedom.

See, when you study Nursing, your career is almost always tied to the hospital. The ward, the shifts, the night duties, the emotional pressure of watching patients suffer daily. It is a calling, and not everyone is cut out for it. Many students enter Nursing because of the name and the uniform, not because of genuine passion โ€” and they struggle.

But Public Health Technology is different. You are trained to think beyond the individual patient. You think about the whole community. Why are people in a particular village falling sick every rainy season? How do we stop a disease outbreak before it spreads? How do we educate mothers on proper nutrition for their children? That is the work of a Public Health Technologist โ€” and it is deeply important work.

Career-wise, Public Health Technology opens doors in:
- Government ministries and LGA health offices
- International health organizations like WHO and UNICEF-backed programs
- NGOs, research institutes, and disease control agencies
- Teaching and health advocacy

And academically, you can upgrade from ND to HND and then to a full degree without starting over.

The truth is Nigeria needs more people working outside the hospital โ€” in the field, in the communities, at the grassroots. That gap is where you come in.

Don't just choose a course because your friend chose it. Choose what aligns with your purpose and gives you room to grow.

ND Public Health Technology at Ikirun College of Health Technology โ€” come and build something that lasts.
