TARABA STATE UNIVERSITY PRODUCES FIRST SET OF MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENCE GRADUATES, INDUCTS 155….

Taraba State University has recorded another major academic milestone with the successful conduct of the maiden induction and oath-taking ceremony for the pioneer graduates of the Department of Medical Laboratory Science, Faculty of Health Science.
The historic event brought together academics, parents, traditional rulers, students, healthcare professionals, and members of the university community who gathered to witness the formal induction of 155 pioneer graduates into the medical laboratory science profession.

The Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sunday Paul Bako, was represented at the ceremony by the DVC (Academic), Assoc. Prof. Ahmad M. Baba. Other dignitaries present included the DVC, Development Services, Prof. Mahmud H. Umar, Deputy Registrar Yakubu Fuwa, Dean of the Faculty of Science, Dr. Rhoda Onyekwena, HoD of Medical Laboratory Science, Dr. Emmanuel Kashibu Chief Medical Director of Specialist Hospital, Dr. Mustapha Mohammed representatives of the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN), and other distinguished guests.

The ceremony marked the first induction exercise in the history of the department and reflected the university management’s commitment to academic excellence and professional development under the leadership of Prof. Sunday Paul Bako. (5) Five graduates who distinguished themselves academically with First Class honours were specially recognized and awarded by the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria for their exceptional performance, dedication, and perseverance.

Speaking during the event, DVC Academic Assoc. Prof. Ahmad M. Baba, who delivered the Vice-Chancellor’s address, described the occasion as the beginning of a new chapter for the university and the department. According to him, the university administration faced enormous challenges upon assumption of office, particularly in securing accreditation and professional recognition for critical programmes, including Medical Laboratory Science.
He noted that through strategic planning, determination, and collective commitment, the university successfully achieved the accreditation milestone now being celebrated.

The Vice Chancellor commended the Executive Governor of Taraba State, Dr. Agbu Kefas, for his unwavering support toward educational development and his commitment to transforming the university into a centre of excellence. He also paid tribute to the late former Registrar of the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria, Dr. Tosan Erhabor, acknowledging his contributions toward the success of the programme. Addressing the newly inducted graduates, he urged them to uphold professionalism, integrity, ethics, and excellence in the discharge of their duties.
Representing the Acting Registrar/CEO of the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria, Dr. Donald Ibe Ofili, the Assistant Director of the SRD Department of MLSCN, Mr. Nnachi A. Orji, congratulated the graduates for being found worthy in character and learning. He described the induction as a formal admission into the noble medical laboratory science profession and encouraged the inductees to maintain ethical standards capable of promoting the image of the profession.

He further applauded the rapid growth of the Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (BMLS) programme within its short existence and praised the leadership of Prof. Sunday Paul Bako for advancing research, scholarship, and community service in the institution.
In his remarks, Head of Department Dr. Emmanuel Kashibu stated that the induction ceremony symbolized the birth of a new generation of medical laboratory professionals equipped to contribute meaningfully to healthcare delivery, research, and national development.
He charged the graduates to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and allow compassion and dedication to guide their service to humanity.

Delivering the closing remarks, DVC Development Services Prof. Mahmud H. Umar congratulated the pioneer inductees and reminded them that, as ambassadors of the university, they carry the responsibility of protecting the values, reputation, and standards of the institution. He expressed confidence that the success recorded by the pioneer graduates would open greater opportunities for future students and further strengthen the university’s academic reputation.

Taraba State University has successfully conducted the First Professional Examination for a total of 150 students in the Department of Medical Laboratory Science, under the supervision of the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN).

This milestone marks another significant stride in the academic advancement of the Faculty of Health Sciences, as the department continues to record remarkable success in its professional examinations. The achievements are attributed to the purposeful leadership of the Vice-Chancellor, Sunday Paul Bako.

The Vice-Chancellor, who was ably represented by the DVC (Administration) Prof. Reuben Jonathan, formally received the MLSCN representatives at the Senate Building.

The MLSCN delegation included the Chief Examiner, Bukar Alhaji of the Department of Medical Laboratory Science, University of Maiduguri Dr. Patrick Okafor from the Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences, Ahmadu Bello University; and the HoD Dr. Emmanuel Kashibu.

In his remarks, Prof. Reuben Jonathan expressed appreciation to the representatives for their commitment and professionalism in overseeing the examination process. Taraba State University (TSU), under the purposeful leadership of its Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Sunday Paul Bako, has achieved a significant international milestone, receiving diplomatic recognition from the Nigerian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur.

The recognition acknowledges the growing academic collaboration between TSU and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), positioning the partnership as a valuable contribution to Nigeria–Malaysia bilateral relations in the education sector.

In an official letter of appreciation, the Nigerian High Commission in Malaysia commended the strategic alliance between the two institutions, describing it as a model for international academic cooperation. The Commission expressed optimism that the collaboration would continue to expand and serve as a reference point for future partnerships between universities in both countries.

The letter, signed by Ambassador Danlami Ibrahim, Chargé d’Affaires a.i., also recognized the contributions of five Nigerian Adjunct Professors at UTM for their dedication and voluntary service in supporting Nigeria’s educational development.

The Health Practitioners Registration Board of Nigeria has initiated plans to collaborate with Taraba State University towards the establishment of an undergraduate programme in Community Health.

The visiting delegation from the Abuja-based regulatory body paid a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Sunday Paul Bako, through the Directorate of Academic Planning. The visit underscores ongoing efforts by the university under the leadership of Prof. Sunday Paul Bako to expand academic offerings, particularly in the health sciences.

The team, comprising five officials, was received on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor by the DVC (Administration), Prof. Reuben Jonathan, during a meeting held at the conference hall today .

Speaking during the engagement, the representatives of the Board outlined their interest in partnering with the university to establish a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Community Health under the Faculty of Health Sciences. The proposed programme is expected to strengthen manpower development in the health sector and align with national priorities in community-based healthcare delivery.

THE VICE-CHANCELLOR PROF. SUNDAY PAUL BAKO LEADS TARABA STATE UNIVERSITY TO FIVE STRAIGHT MATRICULATION MILESTONES…..

The Vice-Chancellor of Taraba State University, Prof. Sunday Paul Bako, has recorded five consecutive matriculation ceremonies, underscoring a period of sustained growth, reform, and institutional transformation since he assumed office in 2022.

The 13th Matriculation Ceremony, held on November 11, 2022, marked the beginning of his administration amid financial challenges. In response, the Vice-Chancellor introduced several internal revenue-generating initiatives, including the establishment of the university bakery, water factory, mushroom farm, butchery, and the restructuring of the university printing press, alongside the creation of TSU-FM radio. These efforts laid the foundation for financial stability and operational efficiency.

At the 14th Matriculation on September 22, 2023, the university recorded notable improvements in infrastructure and service delivery. Key developments included the revitalization of the university clinic, expansion of the Computer-Based Test (CBT) centre, installation of CCTV systems, deployment of campus-wide internet connectivity, and the introduction of solar-powered facilities. Additional achievements included hostel renovations, establishment of faculty e-libraries, and accreditation of academic programmes.

Prof. Bako also commended the Governor of Taraba State, Dr. Agbu Kefas, for approving a 50 percent reduction in tuition fees, a move widely applauded by students and stakeholders.

15th Matriculation Ceremony on August 23, 2024, the university had expanded its academic and institutional profile through local and international collaborations, professional programme accreditations, and the creation of new faculties, including Computing and Artificial Intelligence. The administration also improved campus security, installed solar street lighting, constructed TETFund-supported projects, and established research and development centres such as the Institute for Entrepreneurship, Skill Acquisition, Innovation, Research and Digitization (IESAIRD), and the Centre for Career Development and Employability Services (CCDES).

Further progress was recorded during the 16th Matriculation held on March 28, 2025, with the university strengthening global partnerships, including a Memorandum of Understanding with Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. The institution also introduced new academic programmes, enhanced staff development initiatives, and expanded sporting and recreational infrastructure with the construction of an indoor sports complex.

The 17th Matriculation Ceremony marks the fifth under Prof. Bako’s leadership, reflecting continued commitment to academic excellence and institutional advancement. Recent achievements include the hosting of the university’s first Pre-NUGA Games, expansion of student accommodation, improved staff welfare, and the commissioning of an Entrepreneurship Centre by the North East Development Commission (NEDC), alongside solar-powered infrastructure projects across campus.

The Vice-Chancellor of Taraba State University, Prof. Sunday Paul Bako, has been honoured with the National service and Community impact Award for Excellence in Leadership as part of activities marking the 45th anniversary of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).

The award followed a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor’s office by a delegation of student leaders, including the SRC Chairman of Taraba State University, Comrade Yohanna Emmanuel, alongside Comrade Hope Vyonku of the NANS national leadership.

Speaking during the visit, the SRC Chairman commended Prof. Bako for his tireless efforts in repositioning the university and maintaining a student-focused administration. He noted that the Vice-Chancellor’s commitment to academic excellence and institutional development has significantly elevated the standard of the university.
