Dear Friends,
Expectedly my post on the above subject matter generated very heated response. It is important to remind ourselves that I stated I was not the author of the item but I am taking the liberty to publish and have my friends react. While some commentators read the post patiently a whole lot did selective reading. I thank every one all the same. The aim has been achieved; to stimulate a debate.
My own opinion:
The shortcoming of the write up from the APC apologist is that it did not say that the APC government has been fair and just but that Jonathan was equally unjust.
What most Nigerians want to see is Justice and Equity not a comparison between skewed records. Nigerians want to see an improvement not a comparison with Jonathan's truely disgraceful record.
The post however has a major strength it highlighted in bold relief that is not only one particular ethnic group that seeks to dominate others when a presidents disposition is clannish, it highlights the danger of over concentration of power in our peculiar type of "Imperial Federalism"; that is why in the past 3 months we have been harping on decentralization of powers and the strict adherence to the federal character principles.
I find the section on economic data and analysis ridiculous. Are we saying if oil price drops to zero we shall no longer plan for employment, infrastructural and social development? The massive growth during the period of limited-self-government between 1955 and 1959 when Sir Ahmadu Bello, Dr. Nnamdi Azikwe and Chief Obafemi Awolowo led the three Nigeria regions were not anchored on oil revenue but on sound Vision, clear Economic and Social Development plan.
The Growth was such that Nigeria's GDP per capital compared to Malaysia and Thailand; regrettably Nigeria's GDP per capital today is about $2,149 compared to Thailands $7,379.
Getting back to where we were in historical comparison as a start is what we addressed in two major public lectures in the past which I have attached to the post. I crave your indulgence to read them they are ‘Agenda for All round development’ delivered at Obafemi Awolowo University Ile Ife 2018 (https://cutt.ly/RvYhojI) and ‘Facilitating Resilient and Sustainable Infrastructural Development’ presented at Imperial College London 2014 (https://cutt.ly/OvYhvrl).
The vultures are gathering again seeking to capitalise on the shortcomings of the present administration to return Nigeria to the era of looting. The next election can not simply be about APC or PDP but the credibility and programmes of the various flag bearers, It will be a dubious equation to simply say choose between PDP and APC!
