The University of Abuja was established in 1988 and operated from an improvised location at Wuse, Abuja, for two years before moving to the three blocks of building at the Mini campus, Gwagwalada, where academic activities began in 1991.
From four faculties in 1991, the University now has 16 faculties. They are:
1. Faculty of Agriculture
2. Faculty of Arts
3. Faculty of Education
4. Faculty of Engineering
5. Faculty of Law
6. Faculty of Management Sciences
7. Faculty of Science
8. Faculty of Social Sciences
9. Faculty of Veterinary Medicine
10. Faculty of Clinical Sciences
11. Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences
12. Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences
13. Faculty of Environmental Sciences
14. Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences
15. Faculty of Communication and Media Studies
16. Faculty of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences.
