RE: SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT ON THE ALLEGED ARREST OF AFIA TV JOURNALISTS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIA

The attention of the Management of the University of Nigeria has been drawn to a trending report alleging that the University’s security operatives arrested journalists from Afia Television.

We wish to categorically state that the report, as presented, is misleading and does not accurately reflect what transpired.

The individuals in question, including Mr. Elijah Akuma, gained access to one of the University’s student hostels without proper identification or prior authorization and began approaching students for interviews. Given the sensitive nature of student residential areas, and the University’s responsibility to ensure the security and privacy of its students, this action understandably raised concern, especially among hostel residents, who promptly alerted the University’s security personnel.

In line with established security protocols, the individuals were invited to the University’s security office for proper identification and clarification of their activities. It was during this process that they identified themselves as reporters with Afia TV. The Chief Security Officer immediately contacted the management of Afia TV to verify this claim.
Upon confirmation of their identity, the individuals were asked to go without any further incident.

For the avoidance of doubt, no journalist was arrested or detained. The actions taken by the University’s security unit were purely precautionary, professionally conducted, and fully aligned with standard procedures designed to safeguard members of the University community.

The University of Nigeria maintains a cordial and respectful relationship with journalists and remains firmly committed to upholding the principles of press freedom and transparency. However, media practitioners are advised to adhere to established institutional protocols, including proper identification and prior authorization, especially when accessing restricted or sensitive areas such as student hostels.

We urge the public to disregard the misleading report and to seek clarification from the University’s Public Relations Unit on matters concerning the University of Nigeria.

🚨📢 UNN Management Clarifies Viral Claim on Alleged Ejection of Visually Impaired Student

The Management of University of Nigeria, Nsukka has released an official statement addressing the viral allegation that a visually impaired student, Nnamdi Daniel, was ejected from a university hostel after speaking about accommodation conditions.

According to the University Management, the claim is false and misleading.

📌 What UNN Said

The Directorate of Accommodation recently intensified efforts to remove illegal occupants from hostels as part of measures to reduce overcrowding and improve living conditions for legitimately allocated students.

Management stated that affected individuals were given a 72-hour notice to vacate after reportedly staying in the hostels for over two months without payment.

However, regarding the student mentioned in the viral report:

➡️ The university confirmed that he has not been ejected
➡️ He is reportedly still occupying the hostel space despite not yet paying for accommodation
➡️ Management emphasized that the ultimatum had nothing to do with any media interview or complaint

♿ Inclusiveness Policy Highlighted

The university further noted that the current administration has introduced, for the first time in UNN’s history, a policy focused on:

✔️ Inclusiveness
✔️ Anti-discrimination
✔️ Protection of students and staff with special needs

🏗️ Hostel Upgrade Efforts Ongoing

Management also highlighted ongoing infrastructure improvements, including:

🔧 Renovation plans for:
• Eni-Njoku Hostel
• Balewa Hostel
• Nkrumah Hostel
• Eyo-Ita Hostel

🏢 Construction of new hostels for:
• Clinical students
• Pharmacy students
• Nursing students at Ituku-Ozalla

🔄 Rehabilitation of Zik’s Flats through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP)

📢 The university called on students, staff, and alumni to remain calm and continue supporting the institution during this period of transformation.

👉 Always verify information before spreading it online.
👉 Support constructive dialogue and accountability within the university community.
👉 Stay informed through official updates and credible sources.

📢 Facts matter. Truth matters. Responsible communication matters.

🚨⚠️ INCIDENT REPORT: ALTERCATION INVOLVING UNEC SECURITY

A troubling video has surfaced showing an altercation between security personnel and an unidentified student at University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNEC).

In the footage, security operatives are seen forcefully apprehending the student, who, according to eyewitnesses, claimed to be a Law student. The exact reason for the arrest remains unclear, and reports indicate that the student’s phone was confiscated during the incident.

⚖️ Situations like this raise serious concerns about conduct, professionalism, and the rights of students within the university environment.

No individual should be labeled or treated like a criminal without due process. While security is important, it must always be balanced with respect, restraint, and accountability.

👉 Share this responsibly to raise awareness, not incite violence.
👉 Call for a proper investigation and clarity from the authorities.
👉 Stand for justice, but remain calm and law-abiding.

📢 Accountability matters, let truth lead, not chaos.
