Some time ago, after going through our expenditure account which I was the only depositor as of then, my wife called me and said:
" Babe, I can't believe you spend this much in just one single month. I want to take a few of our utilities and pay for them every month."
I laughed and said to her, " I don't want to stress you for now, we have what we are working on, when we are done building, by that time, you will earn enough to be a strong support to me. Just save your earnings."
She replied, " No babe, I am not saying that I will start feeding us, I just want to take the minor ones. I can still save while I do that. I don't want you to take all the responsibilities. You've been doing it since."
I added, " Okay if you insist, there's no problem. Choose those you want to be paying for, whenever you find it difficult to do, just let me know, and I'll take over. I appreciate your concern."
She chose the least three out of the ten.
Shortly after that, prices of things went up, our cooking gas was one of them, the other two were much affected.
In the first month, she did it perfectly well, even if I already paid when she was not around, she'd reimburse me immediately she returns.
Towards the end of the second month, after paying her last for the month, she shouted in the room.
When I came in to find out what happened, she said to me, " Wait! Is this all you pay every month? Wow! "
I laughed so hard and even fell on the bed.
While she was still surprised going through her debit alerts, I said to her " Ije Nwoke aburo 'baby what are you wearing '".
This is a case of a young husband with no kid yet, by the time you sit down and calculate the bills of a family with one kid, two kids, three kids, four kids, five kids, and so on, you will understand what being the head of the family entails.
That's why I usually advise every young man planning to get married, to strive to attain a certain earning capacity before he venture into marriage so that he won't start
