Prior to the arrival of this pioneer present administration, little was known about the SJC. Some Olusegun Agagu University Of Science And Technology (OAUSTECH) students did not even know that the SJC is in existence not to talk of it's functions. Persuant to this fact, this write up explores the Students' Judicial Council: it's functions, it's members, in other to ensure that OAUSTECH students are enlightened about the SJC.
The Students' Judicial Council
The Students' Judicial Council or SJC for short is the whole body of the SUG Judiciary, that is, it is made up of the Judicial officers and Judicial workers of the OAUSTECH SUG Judiciary.
Functions
The whole essence of the SJC is to sit on and deliberate on cases and to interpret laws made by it's sister body the Students' Representative Council and hence it's functions. Other functions are also assigned to the SJC:
The running and management of matters and affairs of the SJC Court.
The SJC acts as a checks and balance to the other organs of the SUG government.
To protect and defend the fundamental rights of the students.
To enforce justice, equity and fairness to all students in the university.
The SJC has the power to decide on matters within OAUSTECH, and matters relating to it's students. All matters outside the OAUSTECH walls, and matters that do not relate to it's students do not concern the SJC as all those are outside it's jurisdiction.
Members
The SJC is made up of a body of judges and Judicial appointees.
The Chief Judge: He is the head of the SJC.He appoints the other members of the SJC except the judges. He draws up the SJC Court Procedure rules and to amend them where need be. He also sits on matters with the other judges.
The Judges: The other judges are elected to their offices and sit in the SJC Court and deliberate on matters.
The Registrar: The Registrar assigns cases to the Court. All cases to be heard in the SJC Court must be registrar's office where the Registrar would accent to it by stamping the documents of the case with the official stamp of the court and assigns it to the Court where it would be held. The Registrar also keeps all the records of the SJC Court.
The Deputy Registrar : the Deputy Registrar assists the Registrar in carrying out his/her duties.Calls out cases to be heared at the SJC Court.Functions as a clerk.
The Director of Media and Publicity: As the name implies, the director of Media and Publicity handles the image of the SJC. He handles everything public, whether on social media or real life. The Director of Media and Publicity is appointed by the Chief Judge Under Merit.
