Biotechnology Department FUTO Alumni Association pays a courtesy visit to the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology Owerri

The Biotechnology Department FUTO Alumni Association on Tuesday 13th August 2024 paid a courtesy visit to Prof. Nnenna N. Oti, the 8th substantive Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology Owerri.

The purpose of the visit which took place in the Vice Chancellor's conference room, at the Senate building, was to give the Vice Chancellor updated information about the Association and its activities.

At the event, the Association Adviser, Prof.(Mrs). T. E Ogbulie informed the Vice Chancellor of the involvement of the Association in driving the Vice Chancellor's mantra of consolidating the culture of excellence, by giving back to the Department and University, even before its inauguration.

In his address which was submitted to the Vice Chancellor, the Association President, Mr. Agu Reuben Chinedu thanked Prof. Oti for receiving the Association.
He also listed the activities and achievements of the Association within its two (2) months of Inauguration and also highlighted its future engagements and projects.

In her response, the Vice Chancellor expressed her delight and encouraged the Association to keep the flag flying as contributions from the Alumni will help the university thrive better.

The Association presented a wrapper gift bearing the FUTO logo and the Association logo, which the Vice Chancellor excitedly tagged the "Association Uniform".

In the visit, the Association was represented by Prof. (Mrs). T. E Ogbulie (Adviser), Prof. (Mrs). A. C. Udebuani (Patroness), Dr. (Mrs). A. A. Nwachukwu (Vice President/General Secretary), Mrs. Mercy Olatunji (Finance Officer/Treasurer) and Mr. Emmanuel Nwakwasi (Programs/Events Officer).

Mercy is an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Biotechnology, School of Biological Sciences, FUTO. She obtained a B.Sc degree in Plant Science and Biotechnology from Abia State University, Uturu and a Masters of Science degree in Biotechnology from FUTO.

Profile Summary

Reuben Chinedu Agu graduated from the Department of Biotechnology, Federal University of Technology Owerri in 2012. He obtained his Masters degree in Environmental Biotechnology from the Department of Genetics and Biotechnology, University of Calabar. He is also a recipient of Professional Development Certificates from the University of Washington.

Reuben is an Alumnus of the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) Regional Leadership Centre West Africa and a member of the United States Government Exchange Alumni Association (USGEAA) Nigeria. He is committed in promoting Sustainable Development goals 3 (Good health and well being) and 4 (Quality Education) through various community development programs and have received various awards of honour and recognitions.

He is a member of various professional bodies such as Biotechnology Society of Nigeria (BSN) and the Institute of Science & Technology (IST). He also has research works published in reputable journals and have attended several conferences/workshops.

Biotechnology Department, Federal University of Technology Owerri inaugurates Alumni Association.

The Biotechnology Department FUTO Alumni Association recently held her inauguration.

The event which also was the maiden visit of the Association to the Department held on Monday 10th June 2024 at the School of Biological Sciences Conference Room.

In his address, the Dean School of Biological Sciences, Prof. C. S Alisi noted that the Department is the first to have an Alumni Association Inaugurated in the School and charged the Association to work hard in reaching out to other Alumni members across the world in order to achieve more as a group.

The Head, Department of Biotechnology, Prof. J. N Okereke, in his address, highlighted that his aspiration even before he became the HOD was to see that there is an Alumni Association and thanked God for the actualization of that dream. He also mentioned that there are dividends and benefits associated with strong and coordinated Alumni.

Speaking further, he thanked Mr. Agu Reuben and Dr. (Mrs.) Augusta Nwachukwu for their great efforts towards the actualization of the Alumni Association. He also charged everyone to operate as one big family in order to accomplish set goals thereby leaving legacies and taking the lead in the School.

In concluding his speech, he invited the Dean to join him in presenting the certificate of inauguration to the representatives of the Association.

In his address, the President of the Association, Mr. Agu Reuben thanked God for his Grace that made it possible for Alumni members and staff members of the Department to meet again after many years. He also thanked the University management, School of Biological Sciences and the Department of Biotechnology for the great services rendered over the years.

He highlighted that the Association is aimed towards providing valuable resources and networking opportunities, helping Alumni members stay connected and giving back to the Department and University. He mentioned that Alumni members gathered not only to celebrate the inauguration but to reaffirm their commitment to make valuable impact. He also mentioned that the Association has been officially recognized by the National Executive Council of FUTO Alumni under the leadership of Prof. Laz Uzoechi on 13th April 2024.

Concluding his address, Mr Agu affirmed that the programmes of the Association would not only honour the cherished past but also pave way for a brighter future and thanked Alumni members for being part of the Association.

In their goodwill messages, Professor T.I.N. Ezejiofor and Dr. E. U. Ezeji expressed their joy at seeing the products of the Department being good ambassadors and coming back to identify with the Department again after many years.

In a closing remark, the Vice President of the Association, Dr. (Mrs.) Augusta Nwachukwu thanked the Dean of the School of Biological Sciences, the Head of Department and staff members of Biotechnology Department for their support towards the event. She also thanked Alumni members for their great commitment towards the event.

The event had in attendance the Dean of the School of Biological Sciences, the Head of Biotechnology Department, the most Senior Professor in the Department, other lecturers, Technologists, Administrative staff in the Department and Alumni members.
