Debunking Misconceptions: Unlocking the Potential of Human Physiology in Nigeria

As a student medical/human physiologist, I've encountered several misconceptions about our field. It's time to set the record straight. Medical/human physiology is often overlooked in the context of healthcare education, particularly in Nigeria.
Many misconceptions exist about its relevance and application, which undermines its potential as a critical field of study. Understanding these misconceptions alongside the realities of physiology is essential to leveraging its wealth, especially in a resource-rich, yet underserved healthcare landscape.
▎Common Misconceptions in Medical/Human Physiology

1. Physiology is Just Anatomy:
- Reality Check: While anatomy focuses on the structure of the body, physiology examines how these structures function and interact. Understanding physiology is crucial for comprehending disease mechanisms and treatment options.

2. Physiology is Only Relevant to Medicine:
- Reality Check: Physiology has applications beyond medicine, including sports science, nutrition, pharmacology, and even environmental science. It informs practices in various fields, making it a versatile discipline.

3. Physiology is Static:
- Reality Check: Physiological processes are dynamic and adaptable. They can change based on factors like age, environment, and health status. This adaptability is essential for understanding conditions like stress responses or metabolic disorders.

4. Human Physiology is Universally Applicable:
- Reality Check: While many physiological principles are universal, there are significant variations among populations due to genetics, culture, diet, and environment. Understanding these differences is crucial for personalized medicine and public health strategies.

5. Physiology is Not a Research-Intensive Field:
- Reality Check: Physiology is a rich field for research, particularly in areas like neurophysiology, cardiovascular health, and metabolic diseases. Advancements in technology have opened new avenues for exploration.

▎Importance of Human Physiology as a Course

1. Foundation for Health Sciences:
- Physiology serves as a cornerstone for various health-related fields such as medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and physiotherapy. A strong understanding of physiological principles is essential for effective practice.

2. Promoting Public Health:
- Knowledge of human physiology can help address public health issues such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases prevalent in Nigeria. Educating communities about physiological processes can lead to better health outcomes.

3. Research Opportunities:
- Nigeria has a diverse population with unique health challenges. Research in human physiology can contribute to understanding local diseases and developing tailored interventions.

4. Interdisciplinary Applications:
- Physiology intersects with disciplines like biochemistry, molecular biology, and pharmacology, providing a holistic understanding of health and disease.

5. Career Opportunities:
- Graduates with a background in physiology can pursue careers in healthcare, research, academia, and industry, contributing to various sectors.

▎Uncharted Areas to Exploit

1. Local Disease Mechanisms:
- Investigating how common diseases in Nigeria (e.g., malaria, hypertension) affect physiological processes can lead to better treatment protocols and preventive measures.

2. Nutritional Physiology:
- Given the diverse diets across Nigeria, studying the physiological impacts of local foods can enhance nutritional guidelines and public health initiatives.

3. Exercise Physiology:
- With rising interest in fitness and wellness, exploring how exercise affects physiological health can promote healthier lifestyles and combat sedentary behavior.

4. Environmental Physiology:
- Understanding how environmental factors like pollution or climate change affect human physiology can inform public health policies and interventions.

5. Cultural Practices and Physiology:
- Investigating how traditional practices impact physiological health can bridge modern medicine with indigenous knowledge, fostering holistic healthcare approaches.

▎Conclusion
Human physiology is a gold mine that remains largely uncharted in Nigeria. By dispelling misconceptions and embracing its importance, we can cultivate a deeper understanding of the human body that translates into better health outcomes and innovative research solutions. The potential for growth and impact within this field is significant, integration of physiology into various sectors will not only enhance individual health but also contribute to the overall well-being of communities. Presenting an opportunity for Nigeria to advance its healthcare framework and address pressing health challenges.

Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of dementia, is a genetic disorder that slowly eroded memory, thinking skills, and even the ability to perform simple tasks. This devastating brain disorder primarily affects older adults(over 57 million people globally), yet its effects ripple through families and communities, leaving emotional and financial strain in its wake.

Alzheimer’s is primarily caused by significant loss of cholinergic neurons in the basal forebrain, which leads to decreased levels of acetylcholine in the brain. Over time, different areas of the brain shrink. The first areas usually affected are the ones responsible for memories(hippocampus). This cholinergic deficit is associated with the cognitive decline seen in Alzheimer’s patients.

Signs of mild Alzheimer’s include:
* Memory loss that disrupts daily life
* Poor judgment leading to bad decisions
* Loss of spontaneity and sense of initiative
* Losing track of dates or current location
* Repeating questions or forgetting recently learned information.

On World Alzheimer’s Day, we come together to shed light on the struggles faced by patients and caregivers. The disease is not just about forgetfulness; it changes lives, relationships, and futures. There’s no cure for Alzheimer’s for now. Yet, with growing awareness and research, there is hope. Early detection, lifestyle changes, and medical advancements can help manage the disease’s progression.
