1. INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES:
Medical Laboratory Science is a multidisciplinary profession. The Ph.D programme in the department offers Medical Laboratory Scientists the opportunity to specialize in any of the disciplines and aspects or Medical Laboratory Science.

Ordinarily, there is no cause work involved, but students with deficiencies may be required to audit relevant courses to correct such deficiencies. The Ph.D. programme is structured to give students in-depth training in their "special" areas of interest in their various specializations. By this they can emerge as highly skilled and competent scientists well equipped to work as efficient practitioners of Laboratory medicine, field biomedical scientists, biologists, researchers, managers of health service programmes, disease control and quality management experts, teachers, consultants and distinguished scholars within their area of science.

2. OBJECTIVES
a. To produce highly skilled manpower with the requisite intellectual capacity for policy decisions towards sustainable health services, provision of efficient medical laboratory services in specialized areas and quality laboratory management in Nigeria.
b. To produce efficient and competent managerial work force for the health sector.
c. To develop a crop of highly knowledgeable people to further enhance the teaching and learning of biomedical science in institutions of higher learning the world over.
d. To assist and guide students to acquire in-depth and specialized knowledge in various areas of medical laboratory science through the development or theories, perceptions and models in modern laboratory practices with particular application to the developing countries and the developed world at large.

3. DURATION OF PROGRAMME
There shall be full-time and part-time programmes. The minimum period or full-time study for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) shall be three years (6 semesters) while the maximum period shall be five years (10 semesters). For the part time programme, the minimum period shall be four years (8 semesters), while the maximum period shall be six years (12 semester).

4. ELIGIBILITY FOR ADMISSION
i. Graduates of Imo State University or other universities recognized by State University senate, who have obtained an approved Masters degree in Medical Laboratory Science or Masters degree in any of the disciplines/aspects of Medical Laboratory Science provided such a candidates has a first degree or its equivalent in Medical Laboratory Science registrable with the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN).

ii. Successful candidates must register for the Ph.D. programme in accordance with the procedures of Imo State University. Each candidate should have at least two thesis supervisors and should register his/her project (thesis) topic every academic session throughout the "period of studentship.

iii. A candidate duly registered for the Ph.D. programme may be asked to withdraw if he/she fails to complete the programme within the specified period of time. In "special" cases, however, a candidate may apply to senate through the department, the faculty and the postgraduate school for extension.

5. ASSESSMENTS/EXAMINATION
a. A candidate may be required to take some M.Sc courses (not exceeding 6units) during the first 12months of the programme, if it is determined that he/she needs such coursers) for his/her research work. The "candidate however, may or may not be required to take examination in the course(s).

COURSES
a. A candidate may be required to take some M.Sc., courses of not more than 6 units during the first 12 months of the programme if it is determined that he/she needs such courses) for his/her research work.

GENERAL COURSES
All Ph.D Students are expected to do course work of not more than 30 units within the first 12 months of the programme. These comprise two compulsory courses and courses in their areas of specialization.

MASTER OF SCIENCE DEGREE (M.Sc) PROGRAMME
DEGREE:
Chemical Pathology
Haematology
Histopathology or Microbiology

SCOPE OF THE PROGRAMME:
The Scope of the programme will include specialization in any of the following areas: Chemical Pathology, Haematology, Histopathology and Microbiology.

DURATION OF THE M.SC PROGRAMME
The duration of the programme in Medical Laboratory Science is: a. Minimum of 18 months for full-time and 24 months for part-time.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
The candidates seeking enrollment into the M.Sc programme must possess any of the following:-
I. Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (B.MLS) degree with a minimum of second class lower division (2/2) of Imo State University or of any other university acceptable to the senate of Imo State University.
II. FIMLS or AJMLS with a postgraduate diploma in Medical Laboratory Science of Imo State University or any other university acceptable to Imo State University senate.

MODE OF WORK
A student is required to complete and pass a course work to be examined in written papers together with research work to be presented as a report Dissertation
REGULATIONS
I. Successful candidates must register for the M.Sc programme in line with the procedures of the Imo State University.
I1. At the time of registration, candidates should hand in an actual or tentative research proposal for the research project he/she intends to undertake during the cause of study. Each candidate shall be assigned a main project supervisor and an adviser, both of who shall make up the student's supervising committee.
111. The registration of candidates for the M.Sc programme shall lapse if after twenty-four months the candidates has not presented him/herself for examination.

EXAMINATIONS
1. All taught courses and practicals will be examined at the end of each semester. The minimum pass score is 50% and the students are required to register and retake the examination of all the failed courses within six months from the date of the examination in which unsatisfactory scores were obtained by the student.
The result of the research project and literature review seminar shall be written up as thesis and reports respectively and presented to the department through the supervisor(s). These and other aspects of the course shall be defended by the candidate in an oral examination in accordance with the postgraduate guideline.
Grading of the results shall be approved by the school of postgraduate studies.

POST-GRADUATES DIPLOMA PROGRAMMES

COURSE OBJECTIVES, ENTRY REQUIREMENT DURATION AND EXAMINATIONS

OBJECTIVE: The PGD Programme in Medical Laboratory Science offers students who were deficient in their first degree and those with a final diploma certificate awarded by the Medical laboratory Science Council of Nigeria an opportunity to make up their deficiencies for a further career in the chosen area of Study. The programme offers specialized training in all the disciplines and aspects of Medical Laboratory Science.

ENTRY QUALIFICATION
1. Candidates who possess AIMLS or FIMLS, AIMLT or FIMLT of the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria.
2. Graduates of Imo State University or any other recognized universities with a third class bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science

MODE OF STUDY
The mode of study shall be courses taken in two semesters and a research project which will be graded by an external examiner or the Departmental Academic Board of Examiners.

DURATION OF PROGRAMME
The duration of the PGD programme is a minimum of 2 semesters (12 months) and a maximum of 3 semesters (18 months) for full-time students; as well as a minimum of 3 semesters (18 months) and a maximum of 4 semesters (24 months) for part-time students.

REGULATIONS
i. Registration of candidates in the PGD must be in accordance with the procedure of Imo State University.
ii. The registration of candidates for the PGD programme shall elapse if the stipulated maximum periods are exceeded.
iii. Each candidate will have one project and one seminar supervisor who will make up the student's supervisory committee. Each candidate must submit a research proposal of the research project he/she intends to undertake during the programme at the time of registration; and this shall be approved by the Departmental Academic Board.

EXAMINATION
1. At the end of each semester, all taught courses and materials will be examined. The minimum pass score is 50%. Those who intend to enrol for a higher degree in the department must make a minimum score of 60% in all the registered courses.

The written research project shall be assessed by an external examiner or the departmental academic board, who will also examine the student orally. The score of the external examiner or of the Departmental Academic Board will be the student's final score.

Each student will choose a topic as seminar which will be presented to the Department for grading.
