MEMO
RE: UNAUTHORIZED PHOTOGRAPHY AND ONLINE HARASSMENT OF FRESHERS
It has come to the attention of the Students’ Union Government that certain individuals are taking *unauthorized photos of freshers* and posting them online with *mocking or degrading captions. This act is highly unacceptable and violates both ethical conduct and legal rights.
We wish to remind all students that:
✅ Section 37 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria guarantees the Right to Privacy, including the protection of a person’s image and personal life.
✅ According to the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc) Act, 2015, any person who engages in online harassment, bullying, defamation, or privacy violations is liable to legal prosecution, including:
- A fine of up to ₦7 million
- Or imprisonment of up to 3 years
- Or both
- Freshers and all students are hereby advised to report any individual caught taking their photos without consent and using them for mockery online. Reports can be made directly to the Office of the SUG Welfare Secretary for swift action in collaboration with the university authorities.
Let’s promote a campus culture of respect, dignity, and safety.
Signed:
Comr. Okwudili Emmanuel
