ANTIDEPRESSANTS
©OA'23📌

Antidepressants are a class of medications used to treat various mental health conditions, primarily depression. They work by altering the levels of certain chemicals in the brain, known as neurotransmitters, which are involved in mood regulation. Antidepressants can help alleviate symptoms of depression, such as persistent feelings of sadness, loss of interest in activities, changes in appetite or sleep patterns, and difficulty concentrating. This comprehensive note will cover the different types of antidepressants, how they work, potential side effects, considerations for use, and other relevant information.

Types of Antidepressants:

1. Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs): SSRIs are among the most commonly prescribed antidepressants. They work by increasing the levels of serotonin, a neurotransmitter associated with mood regulation, in the brain. Examples of SSRIs include fluoxetine (Prozac), sertraline (Zoloft), and escitalopram (Lexapro).

2. Serotonin and Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors (SNRIs): SNRIs work by increasing the levels of both serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain. This dual action can be beneficial for individuals with depression and certain anxiety disorders. Examples of SNRIs include venlafaxine (Effexor) and duloxetine (Cymbalta).

3. Tricyclic Antidepressants (TCAs): TCAs were among the first antidepressants developed and are less commonly prescribed today due to their side effect profile. They work by increasing levels of serotonin and norepinephrine. Examples include amitriptyline and imipramine.

4. Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs): MAOIs are an older class of antidepressants that are typically used when other antidepressants have not been effective. They work by inhibiting the activity of monoamine oxidase, an enzyme that breaks down neurotransmitters such as serotonin and norepinephrine. Examples include phenelzine and tranylcypromine.

5. Atypical Antidepressants: This category includes a
