The fieldwork kicked off in earnest on Wednesday, September 20th, 2023, with the first week dedicated to mapping the Amarata community. The objective was to understand the community's boundaries and identify areas of need. The students, along with their coordinators, received a warm welcome from the community leaders, including HRM Sam David of Amarata Epie Community, representatives from the IDC, and the local youth population.
Week 2 is currently underway, focusing on community diagnostics. The students are actively engaging with residents, administering questionnaires, and collecting health-related data. This data will be carefully analyzed to draw meaningful conclusions.
Week 3 will see the students diving deeper into community mobilization and participation, ensuring that they actively involve community members in their public health initiatives.

After three weeks of community engagement, the students will spend another three weeks in the Local Government Area (LGA) Health Department's Disease and Surveillance Notification Unit. Here, they will gain practical experience in disease surveillance, contributing to their comprehensive understanding of public health practices.

In the following three weeks, the students will work in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) at the state office. This phase of the fieldwork will involve health programme planning, implementation, and evaluation. It provides a unique opportunity for the students to contribute to global health initiatives.

As a culmination of their fieldwork, the students will embark on a one-day excursion to Rivers State, Port Harcourt, on November 29th. During this trip, they will visit the remand home, disability home, and home for the elderly. This experience aims to broaden their horizons and deepen their understanding of healthcare needs in different settings.
Bayelsa Medical University is committed to fostering practical learning experiences for its students, and this fieldwork programme is a testament to that commitment. We anticipate that this endeavor will not only benefit our students but also have a positive impact on the communities they serve.
