Jacqueline Durand was a 22-year-old college student from Coppell, Texas, studying to become a dog trainer. She loved animals deeply and had a natural bond with them, which made her passionate about working with dogs. In December 2021, she accepted a dog-sitting job for a couple in South Dallas who owned several dogs. The owners assured her that the animals were friendly and well-behaved, even leaving her specific instructions to follow while she cared for them.
But what was meant to be a routine dog-sitting job turned into a nightmare.
The day Jacqueline arrived at the house, she unlocked the front door and stepped inside. Within moments, two of the dogs—a mixed-breed boxer and a German shepherd—violently attacked her. The assault was sudden and vicious. The dogs mauled her face, ears, and body, tearing off almost all the skin from her head. She was alone and unable to call for help. Her cell phone had been knocked away during the attack, and it wasn’t until the front door was left open that a passerby noticed something was wrong and called 911.
First responders arrived to find Jacqueline barely alive. She was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Doctors placed her in a medically induced coma. The severity of her injuries was overwhelming. She lost her ears, lips, nose, and a large part of her face. It would take dozens of surgeries to begin reconstructing what had been so violently destroyed.
Despite the trauma, Jacqueline survived. When she woke up from the coma, she was faced with the devastating reality of her new appearance and the long road to recovery ahead. But her spirit remained remarkably strong. She began physical therapy, endured grueling surgeries, and slowly relearned how to do basic tasks. Through it all, she stayed focused on healing and never gave up hope.
