Turning Constraints Into Opportunities

A house is shaped as much by its constraints as by its possibilities.

At this Remuera site, the existing conditions, orientation and relationship to the surrounding landscape informed a home that is carefully composed around light, outlook and privacy.

Rather than treating constraints as limitations, they became part of the architecture - shaping the way spaces connect, views are framed and the house sits within its setting.

Sometimes, it’s simply about seeing things differently.

Many residential projects begin with questions of site response rather than layout.

This study explores two early-stage massing directions based on a single site:
• two new houses
• a house with a secondary dwelling

Both test how density, privacy, and outdoor space can be balanced at the outset of design.
