Manila Central University (MCU) welcomed its newest Centralinos through Ignite โ€™26: Centralino Full Blast, bringing together students from various college departments for a day of performances and activities on September 25 at the MCU Centennial Gymnasium.

Led by the University Student Council (USC) and Student Affairs and Services, the annual freshie event featured performances from Himig, the MCU Band, Dwarf, Destiny Palisoc, and Bigmama Production artists Destini, Abztract, the Franco Brothers, and Div9.

Students were greeted by the Supremos drumline and received their freshie kits before Ritmo opened the program with a lively performance, setting the tone for the dayโ€™s activities.

The gymnasium filled with cheers as freshmen from different college departments joined in the celebration through colorful outfits, sing-alongs, mini-games, and interactive booths.

Despite several postponements, students expressed excitement as the event finally pushed through.

โ€œAfter so many reschedulings and weeks of delay, Ignite was finally held,โ€ said Charmaine Sabado, a freshman from the BA Communication program. Sabado added that the event showed the effort and planning put into MCUโ€™s activities, making her look forward to future events.

Ignite โ€™26 marked the beginning of freshmen and transfereesโ€™ college journey at MCU, ensuring the day served as a meaningful kickoff for the newest Centralinos.

Society has built a world loud enough to demand that a person should voice their struggles in times of dire need, yet it remains unprepared to take on the burden when they do, turning the entire room silent.

Picture a situation where someone suddenly requires assistance, drops their guard, and admits they are in a tough situation. They feel suffocated while trying to reach out for a surface to breathe on. In that moment, one knows exactly whatโ€™s going through their mind. The atmosphere suddenly changes, and you canโ€™t think of the right way to respond, so words get stuck in your throat.

There are times when people are told to speak up. But when they have the courage to vent, the world has suddenly forgotten how to listen and respond.

Perhaps the question should not only be, โ€œHow do we encourage people to reach out?โ€ but also, โ€œAre we prepared to receive them when they do?โ€

According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), su***de remains a massive global public health challenge.

In fact, more than 720,000 lives are lost annually, making su***de the third leading cause of death among people aged 15โ€“29. A heartbreaking situation for many. Each year, thousands of people lose their lives. These losses leave families, peers, and entire communities consumed by sorrow, mourning the devastating loss of a loved one and a life so precious.

Why is it so simple to advise a person to โ€œreach out,โ€ yet the moment that person finds the courage to do so, others are left completely baffled by what to say? It is as if telling a drowning person to shout for help while deep in the water, and when they do, helpers become onlookers who mirror their helplessness because no one has any idea what to do or say.

This loss for words does not always come from a lack of sympathy, but rather from a deep fear of choosing the wrong words, or ultimately saying the wrong things and hurting the person who should be consoled, thereby worsening the situation.

Can understanding the psychosociological factors behind this freezing up or fear provide answers?

The solution begins with reconsidering these automatic responses to break the awful silence.

Approaching a person in need already provides a lot of support and help. That said, relying on phrases like โ€œAre you okay?โ€ โ€œYou can reach out,โ€ or โ€œDo you need help?โ€ is like going around in circles with the same responses without offering true relief.

Knowing that someone needs help and knowing how to respond when they ask for it are two different skills. Sometimes, support begins with simple words: โ€œIโ€™m here. You donโ€™t have to explain everything right now.โ€ โ€œThank you for trusting me enough to tell me.โ€ Or, โ€œYou donโ€™t have to go through this alone. Letโ€™s find help together.โ€

On the other hand, phrases such as โ€œJust think positive,โ€ โ€œOther people have it worse,โ€ or โ€œYouโ€™ll get over itโ€ may unintentionally minimize what a person is experiencing and make them less willing to speak again.

Rather than staying frozen in place or staying silent, a person can choose calmness over fear by assessing the situation and practicing non-judgmental support and presence.

Listening does not always mean having the right answer. Sometimes, it means resisting the urge to fill every silence. It means allowing someone to speak without immediately judging, correcting, or minimizing what they feel.

When responding to someone in crisis, it is not a solution to immediately โ€œfixโ€ their problems, but to validate their openness and their courage. This means not going in the direction of automated responses and simply offering a safe approach: โ€œI want to listen; tell me when youโ€™re ready.โ€

True relief begins with acknowledging their pain and allowing them to speak entirely at their own pace.

Perhaps we have been asking the wrong question all along. The goal is not to become experts at saying the perfect thing. It is to become people who are willing to stay when someone finally finds the courage to speak.

However, reaching out doesnโ€™t solely rely on an individual or one person. True safety requires ample support from institutions and communities.

But being present does not mean carrying the situation alone. When someone is in immediate danger or expresses an intention to harm themselves, seeking professional or emergency assistance is not an overreactionโ€”it is an act of care. A friend can listen, but they do not have to become the personโ€™s only source of support.

To address the gap between the need for help and silence, the DOH established the 24/7 National Crisis Hotlines through the National Center for Mental Health (NCMH). The service specializes in immediate psychological first aid, compassionate assistance, and safety planning. The hotline can be accessed through the short code 1553 or the โ€œKamusta Ka? Tara Usap Tayoโ€ service.

Whereas, Manila Central University (MCU) supports and monitors its students through programs such as routine wellness interviews and student interviews.

Schools, too, have a role in making that world safer. Student support initiatives provide opportunities for students to be heard, recognized, and connected to appropriate support when they need it.

One does not need to be scared or overthink such things. Rather, the most profound help is to offer a listening earโ€”proving that โ€œreaching outโ€ relies entirely on the providerโ€™s willingness to help and the courage to stay present.

A person who reaches out may not always be asking for a solution. Sometimes, they are simply hoping that someone will stay long enough to listen.

A world worth reaching out to is not built on finding the perfect response; it is built on how you act on that response.
