In a world full of pressure, deadlines, and expectations, we are often focused on meeting demands and overcoming challenges—but who reminds us to pause and take care of our own well-being?

Last April 15, 2026, this Wellness Wednesday became a meaningful space for us to breathe, reflect, and regain our sense of calm. Through insightful discussions on stress management and handling pressure, we were reminded that staying grounded and composed is a strength we can all develop.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Mrs. Alene J. Tan for sharing her wisdom with such grace and depth. Her inspiring words and valuable insights encouraged us to manage stress with clarity, embrace calmness, and face life’s pressures with resilience and confidence.

𝗕𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸: 𝗔 𝗦𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗝𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆

​Stepping into Tapas and Toma in Mandurriao, Iloilo City, BSTM 2nd-year students embarked on a sensory journey that transcended the typical dining experience. On April 15, 2026, as part of their Philippine Gastronomical Tourism course, these aspiring tourism professionals traded their textbooks for tasting spoons to explore the deep-rooted connections between history and the plate. This core subject is about more than just identifying ingredients; it focuses on understanding food as a living cultural heritage and a primary driver for modern travel destinations.

​The highlight of the visit was La Mesa Nocturna, a meticulously crafted 7-course Filipino-Spanish degustation led by the expertise of Chef EJ and Chef Ivan. As the only dedicated degustation experience currently offered in Iloilo, it provided a rare, front-row seat to culinary innovation. From the first bite to the final course, the students witnessed how technical precision and storytelling can transform a simple meal into a high-value tourism asset.

​Ultimately, this "food crawl" was far more than an excursion. By engaging with the chefs and deconstructing each dish, the students learned that a degustation is an intentional dialogue between the producer, the cook, and the consumer. They walked away with a profound realization: in the world of tourism, the table is a stage where heritage is preserved. The La Mesa Nocturna experience stands as a gold standard for how local flavors can be showcased to the world.

🌴✨ 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐁𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐧: 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐈𝐰𝐚𝐡𝐢𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐏𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐧

When people think about visiting 𝐈𝐰𝐚𝐡𝐢𝐠 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐅𝐚𝐫𝐦, they are often surprised to learn that it is not only a correctional facility but also one of the most unique attractions in Puerto Princesa, located in the beautiful province of 𝐏𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐧. Known around the world as a “𝒑𝒓𝒊𝒔𝒐𝒏 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒘𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒔,” this remarkable place shows a different approach to rehabilitation and second chances.

Established in 1904 𝐝𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐀𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐝, Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm spans more than 45,000 𝐚𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝, making it one of the largest open correctional facilities in the world. Instead of being confined behind traditional prison bars, 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐃𝐞𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐋𝐢𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐲 (𝐏𝐃𝐋𝐬) live and work in a community-like environment where they are encouraged to rebuild their lives through productive activities.

At Iwahig, rehabilitation focuses on 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟-𝐬𝐮𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲. Many inmates participate in 𝐟𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐟𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐜𝐤 𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠, helping cultivate the vast land of the penal farm. Others learn valuable 𝐯𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐬𝐮𝐜𝐡 𝐚𝐬 𝐰𝐨𝐨𝐝𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐟𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐨𝐮𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐫 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. These programs aim to prepare them for a better future and help them reintegrate into society after completing their sentences.

During their On-the-Job Training (OJT) with Whistler Travel and Tours, students from Guimaras State University traveled to Palawan to gain hands-on experience in the tourism industry, particularly in destination familiarization, tour operations, and guest engagement. As part of their city tour in Puerto Princesa, they had the opportunity to visit Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm—an experience that truly stood out during their training.

The visit left a strong and positive impression on the trainees. They were amazed by how the community inside Iwahig operates with trust, discipline, and a sense of responsibility. Witnessing how Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) are given the chance to work, learn valuable skills, and live with dignity deeply inspired them. It changed their perspective, showing that tourism is not only about beautiful places, but also about meaningful stories and human transformation.

For the students, the experience was both eye-opening and heartwarming. They appreciated the peaceful environment, the welcoming atmosphere, and the genuine efforts of the people within the facility to rebuild their lives. It became a memorable highlight of their OJT journey—one that strengthened their passion for tourism and reminded them of the power of second chances and hope.

What makes Iwahig even more interesting is that it is 𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬. Tourists traveling around Puerto Princesa often include the penal farm in their itinerary to witness this unique correctional system. Guests can explore the area, learn about its history, and visit the 𝐬𝐨𝐮𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐫 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐦𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐟𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐬.
