In line with Memorandum Order No. 4, Series of 2026 from the Office of the Chancellor, the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) of Mindanao State UniversityโMaguindanao held its college orientation for students and parents/guardians on February 4, 2026, at the Audio-Visual Room, reaffirming its commitment to academic excellence and inclusive stakeholder engagement.
The orientation formally opened with a message from CAS Dean Dr. Badrudin K. Abdul, who underscored the significance of the gathering as both the collegeโs first comprehensive orientation and a recognition of students who attained academic excellence as Deanโs Listers.
Dean Abdul further highlighted leadership, discipline, and character formation, stating:
โKayo as a future professional and future leaders; kung sino ang ready you were able to lead, yung may paninindigan, niyaba college tanu na isa (ika duwa) a walay tanu, kabamilinis na training ground nu tuba every Friday, niya ba common sa bangagi niya sa CAS na kalimpiyo.โ He reminded students that consistency matters more than perfection, adding, โHindi problema ang failure; ang problema ay hindi ka consistent.โ He also stressed that education is a shared responsibility that thrives through open communication among the institution, students, and families.
Following the deanโs message, Department of Political Science Chairperson Ralph Darren S. Santillan, MA, presented the college policies and mandates. He explained that CAS serves as the academic foundation of various degree programs, offering General Education Courses (GEC), minor courses, and major programs. He also discussed the collegeโs organizational structure, instructional mandates, and its mission to develop studentsโ higher-order and critical thinking skills.
Representing the Islamic Studies Department, Prof. Jawwad Abdullah discussed general academic policies, including the requirement to retake failed minor or major subjects, the strict enforcement of academic honesty, and the disciplinary consequences of plagiarism and cheating. He also outlined course requirements such as practicum, internship, and thesis, as well as academic advising procedures, prerequisite completion, subject substitution policies, grading systems, and departmental academic expectations.
Shifting to student governance matters, CASSA Governor Norjannah M. Campiao explained the enrollment process through an infographic presentation. She detailed the flow of enrollment, securing clearances through CASSA officers, settling fines or penalties, paying membership fees, and completing departmental requirements.
Meanwhile, CASSA Adviser Joey Baldestamon discussed the academic services available to students, identifying responsible offices and proper channels for addressing concerns and inquiries.
The program also featured a message from Assistant Dean Lydia Bawa, PhD, who addressed parents and guardians, emphasizing their crucial role in supporting studentsโ academic journeys. She encouraged parents to provide emotional and moral support, guide and listen to their children, and promote discipline and good study habits.
Adding to the highlights, CASSA Vice Governor Rehana Ali presented the accomplishment report last semester, showcasing CASSAโs contributions to college participation in campus-wide activities and the overall growth of the College of Arts and Sciences. This was followed by the presentation of second-semester plans, programs, and activities by Governor Campiao.
The most anticipated segment of the program was the recognition of the Deanโs Listers, honoring students for their academic excellence. The event concluded with a closing message from CASSA Adviser Joey Baldestamon, who expressed gratitude to parents, congratulated the awardees, and commended CAS students and CASSA officers for their active participation and commitment to academic growth. The event was also attended by faculty members from different departments of the College of Arts and Sciences, reinforcing institutional support for the initiative.
