As an institution of higher learning, Central Mindanao University (CMU) has strived for excellence in research. CMU is committed to undertake and promote collaborative, participatory and interdisciplinary researches to generate knowledge and technologies to improve the quality of life. It has responded to the demands for national development, thus its research activities are directed towards contributing to our goals for development. The University Research Unit is one of the major pillars of CMU. Research is one of the four main functions of the university, together with instruction, extension, and production. As stated in Section 2 of Republic Act No. 4498 issued on 19 June 1965, CMU shall “provide programs of instruction at all levels in the arts, sciences, technical, professional, educational, and philosophical fields, and shall concern itself with pure and applied research in all branches of knowledge for the intellectual and professional growth of faculty members, for the advance instruction of students, particularly graduate students, and for increasing knowledge and understanding”. To achieve our goals, the University has to a) harness and develop its human resources; b) conduct periodic evaluation of the researches of the faculty; c) improve laboratory and office research facilities in order to produce quality research; d) establish and maintain linkages with other government and non-government institutions locally and internationally; and e) conduct relevant basic and applied researches to answer the needs of the community in the region or of the entire Mindanao. The University Research Unit consists of the following: the Research Office, the University Museum and the Mt. Musuan Zoological and Botanical Garden (MMZBG). UNIVERSITY RESEARCH OFFICE
The Research Office coordinates, facilitates and monitors all researches and research-related activities of the University. It is also where the Research Director holds office. The Research Office is located at the second floor of the CMU Research and Extension Complex. UNIVERSITY MUSEUM
The University Museum showcases the botanical, zoological and anthropological collections of the University. To date, the Botany Section has data-based 7,748 plant specimens, catalogued according to family, genus and species. The Zoology Section catalogued 3,030 specimens according to family, genus and species. The Anthropological Section have catalogued 534 ethnological materials and 390 archaeological materials. Aside from specimen data-basing, the University Museum also renders taxonomic services. It was able to help 65 faculty and students in their taxonomy-related queries and has collected a total income of P 30, 412.95 for CY 2011. MUSUAN ZOOLOGICAL AND BOTANICAL GARDEN
By virtue of BOR No. 39 series of 1999, Mt. Musuan has been declared as a zoological and botanical garden, and known as the Mt. It maintains a collection of threatened, endemic and rare plants, including ornamental plants. To date, about 78 species of trees have been documented in Mt. It has also a collection of wildlife like monkeys, rabbits, butterflies, snakes, and wild cats. The MMZBG has established a vermiculture area and a plant nursery. The MMZBG is one of the ecotourism destinations in Bukidnon. In 2011, it had received a total of 12,130 visitors/climbers with a total income of ₱ 115,810.00. Musuan has a viewing deck, funded by the Department of Tourism. It has also a Tourist Information Center, which is currently under construction. Visitors can enjoy horse-back riding at the MMZBG for a very minimal fee. LINKAGES AND COLLABORATIONS
The University has established, through research, linkages with the following: CHED, PCARRD Grants-In-Aid (GIA), PHILRICE, DA-BAR, DENR, DOT, Philippine Eagle Foundation, DOST-PCARRD, NorMinCoHRD (Northern Mindanao Consortium for Health Research and Development), and the Institute for Systematic Botany, University of Zurich, Switzerland, Texas A & M University, University of Connecticut, USA, NSF-Tunghai University of Taiwan, National Science Foundation and Gyeongsang National University, South Korea. Dissemination of research results
One of the mandates of the University Research Office is to disseminate research results to many stakeholders. The research results are disseminated through scientific meetings, journal publication, production of IEC materials, and through the Annual In-House Review and Evaluation of On-going and Completed Researches. To be a global University, and to maintain being CHED’s Center of Excellence/Development, researchers are encouraged to publish in ISI (Institute for Scientific Information, now Thomas-Reuters) Indexed Journals. UNIVERSITY RESEARCH COMMITTEE:
The University Research Committee (URC) coordinates the research programs of the University. It is a policy-making body and it acts as an advisory to the Research Director. It is composed of the Research Director, who acts as the chairperson, the Research Coordinator of each College, the Coordinator of the Biodiversity Research and Development Unit (BRDU), the Coordinator of the Crop Research and Development Unit (CRDU) and the Coordinator of the Social Science Research and Development Unit (SSRDU).
