UA&P College of Arts and Sciences faculty member Zyra Lentija was invited to join the Advocacy Panel on Emerging Technologies and the Environment at the John Paul II International Conference 2026, where she shared her reflections on the plenary lecture of Prof. Arlen A. Ancheta, PhD.

Her question for our age: do we meet the world as something to harvest, or something to steward? Drawing on Tolkien's Saruman and Treebeard, Aquinas's vision of the human person as "procurator" rather than "dominus," and Pope Leo XIV's call to be "Weavers of Hope," she traced a path between technical power and moral wisdom—insisting that technology must serve the flourishing of the human person, never grind it down.

The greatest tragedies, she reminded us, come when we mistake power for wisdom. To move forward is not to abandon technology, but to orient it toward the true, the good, and the beautiful.

Congratulations, Dr. Antonio, Messrs. Benitez, Pinga, and Payte, and Ms. Odono! 🎉

Five UA&P faculty members presented their research at the 7th Biennial Conference of the Asian Shakespeare Association, held at City University of Hong Kong from June 12 to 14, 2026, under the theme "Shakespeare Between Worlds: Portals and Pathways."

Jaime Benitez and Dr. Joachim Emilio B. Antonio presented in the symposium on translating and teaching Shakespeare, arguing for performance and ten-minute abridgments as entry points for Filipino students. Juliana Maria Odoño and Gino Pinga joined the panel on Shakespeare and popular culture—Odoño tracing the Bard's traces in Nick Joaquin's "Pop Stories for Groovy Kids" (1979), and Pinga reading Shakespeare's Sonnet 73 alongside Clara Benin's "Dust." Xelestine Gabriel Payte examined Shakespeare in Philippine teleseryes as part of the panel on Shakespeare on screen.

The biennial conference gathers scholars, students, and practitioners to study Shakespeare from Asian perspectives. This year's edition was held in conjunction with the Tang Shu Wing Theatre Studio's Hong Kong International Shakespeare Festival.

UA&P-CAS is proud to share that History Department Associate Professor Dr. Marya Svetlana T. Camacho will serve as a Day 3 discussant for Batobalani sa Kabilin. The workshop focuses on safeguarding the Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Santo Niño de Cebu Devotion and is implemented by the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI) and International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) Philippines through the Kabilin Partnership.

The workshop will be held on June 17-19 at the Kabilin Center, Cebu City.

Looking forward to UA&P-CAS Kagawaran ng Filipino's book coming soon! 🎉

I am always flattered when I meet people well-established in their respective professions (those in their 40s to 60s) who tell me that they learned their basic economics from the textbooks I wrote in the 1970s and 1980s for both high school and college students, especially in private schools. The most widely used text for high school which I wrote was entitled Guide to Economics for Filipinos. For college students, I authored Introduction to Economics, Economics of a Nation, Economics for Consumers, and Economics for Industry.

I was fortunate to have a whole team of graduate students at the then-fledgling Center for Research and Communication (CRC)—precursor of the University of Asia and the Pacific (UA&P)—to help me gather local data. This ensured that the books were not merely theoretical, but truly helped students understand what was happening to the Philippine economy. For a long time before that period, the leading colleges were using textbooks written by foreigners, such as Nobel laureate Paul Samuelson. There was little in these foreign textbooks that reflected Philippine economic realities; the monetary examples given were even in United States (US) dollars.
