The Social Work program of Pangasinan State University participated in an activity under the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between Pangasinan State University and Asian Pacific Christian School, Inc. (APSCI). Faculty members from different colleges and unitsโ€”John Bernardo from the College of Fisheries and Environmental Sciences; Crislyn Villanueva and Great I Am W. Gismundo from the College of Arts, Sciences and Letters; and Dr. Jun S. Camara from the Campus Research and Development Unitโ€”served as Research Consultants and Research Panelists during the Grade 12 Research Public Defense held on February 20, 2026, at Asian Pacific Christian School, Inc., Capas, Tarlac.

The team of research experts from Pangasinan State University provided valuable insights and mentored students from various strands in enhancing their research write-ups, ensuring proper alignment among their objectives, methodology, and analysis. The APSCI students actively and enthusiastically presented their outputs, demonstrating openness and a strong willingness to respond to questions for the further improvement of their studies.

The Social Work Department of Pangasinan State University Lingayen Campus commends its student researchers, Gillian E. Gumpeng, Sherly Ann Meneses, and Camille Palma, for conducting a consultation visit with the National Authority for Child Care Regional Alternative Child Care Office I in line with their undergraduate thesis.

Their study on open adoption examines its potential as a basis for future policy recommendations or possible amendments to adoption laws in the Philippines. The consultation reflects their commitment to ensuring that the research is grounded in field realities, informed by experts, and aligned with existing laws and the best interest of the child.
The visit aimed to discuss the researchersโ€™ study on โ€œopen adoptionโ€, a practice in Western countries. Primarily, the study seeks to explore the possibility whether the concept of open adoption can be used as a basis for policy recommendation or for future amendments in the related laws on adoption in the Philippines.

Eight groups from the Bachelor of Science in Social Work program presented their researchable topics for Defense 1. This stage, which is equivalent to the traditional title defense, has been innovatively redesigned by the BS Social Work Departmentโ€™s Research Coordinator, Mr. Great I Am W. C. Gismundo, to shift the focus away from creating research titles during the first defense. Instead, students are guided to identify researchable, literature-grounded problems that will form the foundation of their research journey.

he panel of evaluators was composed of Mr. Great I Am W. C. Gismundo, CASL/Social Work Department Research Coordinator and accredited statistician, who served as the chair of the defense; Ms. Donabel C. Sabas, Social Work faculty member and esteemed researcher of the department, who served as the content expert; and Dr. Potenciano D. Conte, Jr., an esteemed researcher and accredited statistician recognized as an Outstanding Educator, Outstanding Researcher, and Outstanding Extensionist, who served as the method expert.

Moreover, several students from the lower year levels also attended the activity as part of the departmentโ€™s best practice of introducing students to the processes they will encounter in the future.

The defense proceeded smoothly and was completed within the allotted time. The student-researchers presented their topics confidently, and no major issues arose during the presentations. The session concluded with enthusiasm as the students prepared for ๐ƒ๐ž๐Ÿ๐ž๐ง๐ฌ๐ž ๐Ÿ: ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ฉ๐จ๐ฌ๐š๐ฅ ๐ƒ๐ž๐Ÿ๐ž๐ง๐ฌ๐ž, scheduled before the end of the semester.

On September 7, 2025, four BS Social Work students presented their undergraduate thesis at the Gemilang Maju Publikasi Ilmiah (GMPI) International Conference on Teacher Education, Learning Assessment, and Graduate Studies 2025.

Two groups participated in the event. Ms. Ruth Khryssa Ubilas and Ms. Lea Cayabyab presented their study titled โ€œFactor Analysis of the Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situations (AICS) Programs: The Social Work Helping Process for Educational Assistance,โ€ while Ms. Tanya Biblanias and Ms. Nel Jessa Operaรฑa delivered their research โ€œStrong Hands, Soft Hearts: Realities and Challenges of Solo Fathers in Anda Solo Parent Association (ASPA).โ€

Other students from the BS Social Work program, especially those preparing to take their Social Work Research courses, also attended as observers to learn from the international conference setup and to show support to the presenters.

Moreover, Ms. Ruth Khryssa Ubilas was awarded as the Best Participant in their cluster. This marks a historic milestone for the Social Work Department of Pangasinan State University, as it is the first time students have presented their research at an international conference.

Mr. Great I Am W. C. Gismundo, a dedicated researcher and a faculty of College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters - Social Work Department of Pangasinan State University Lingayen Campus, was an invited speaker at the prestigious GMPI International Conference on Teacher Education, Learning Assessment, and Graduate Studies 2025. This international academic exchange was organized by Gemilang Maju Publikasi Ilmiah (GMPI) in Serang, Indonesia, in collaboration with Mahasarakham University, Thailand, and Educators for Learning Assessment and Research Education (ELARE), Philippines. Held virtually via Zoom, Mr. Gismundo delivered his session during the pre-conference workshop on September 6, 2025.

The core of Mr. Gismundo's highly relevant session was the GRAND Framework, an acronym for Guidance, Reinforcement, Ameliorative, Negotiation, and Deterrence. This innovative academic-based social work framework uniquely applies social work principles to strategically address often-overlooked non-academic factors such as stress, motivation, and environmental challenges that significantly influence student performance, particularly in high-stakes assessments like licensure examinations. He emphasized that passing the exam is not determined by a single factor but by multiple, interconnected elements, which the GRAND framework integrates into studentsโ€™ preparation. A major application of the framework is its current use by social work students in preparing for the licensure examination, beginning as early as admission and continuing through to the actual exam.

The GRAND Framework is designed to serve a dual purpose: first, as a structure for implementers in managing students, and second, as a basis for learnersโ€™ development by providing measures of success indicators. This emphasis on holistic student support, rooted in social work principles, represents a forward-thinking approach to academic success. To immediately demonstrate the utility of his work, Mr. Gismundo engaged the participants by introducing an innovative self-facilitated tool just before the workshop proper. This practical resource allowed attendees to bypass lengthy theoretical discussions and immediately explore and apply the GRAND Framework's concepts for their own assessment and evaluation needs. Mr. Gismundo not only ensured high engagement but also reinforced the frameworkโ€™s accessibility and potential for real-world impact across diverse educational settings. His presentation successfully highlighted PSU's contribution to integrating social science with educational assessment.
